Hello everyone,
Back in January, Neal responded to a posting I had on the Roots Web page.
Since then this entire "get-together" has blossomed. Before the development
of all this, I shared the following information with Neal. Now I share it
with you. Sorry it has taken awhile for me to "post" this...I've had many
computer problems and am now feeling confident again. I've enjoyed reading
all of your "postings" although I haven't had enough time to fully digest
them. They are all printed out so I can cross-reference them easier. I
have noticed a few of you going back to Thomas/Martha Carrier. I think this
is where I'll end up too! Well here goes:
My direct descent from the Carrier's is as follows (briefly) beginning with
my mother:
Helen Mary LAVANCHER born March 15, 1922 in Syracuse, NY and died November
27, 1998 in Syracuse, NY. Her mother was:
Bertha Elizabeth CARRIER born March 2, 1895 in Fulton, NY and died May 31,
1980 in Syracuse, NY. Bertha had one brother: Leo Webster Carrier
2/11/1900-7/16/1966. Their parents were:
Frank R. CARRIER born Feburary 6, 1872 in Fulton, NY and died February 8,
1942 in Syracuse, NY. He married Helen HOTCHKISS in (date & place unknown).
They had two children: Bertha Elizabeth and Leo Webster. Helen HOTCHKISS
born July 2, 1873 in Fulton, NY and died December 25, 1915 in Syracuse, NY.
(After Helen died, Frank married Almeda May Rowland-this was a second
marriage for both of them. They had no children together.) Frank R.
CARRIER'S parents were:
W.Irving CARRIER born February 18, 1842 in (place unknown) and died July 19,
1920 in Fulton, NY. He married Adora A. REYNOLDS on December 21, 1869 in
(place unknown). They had three children: Frank R., Jesse Irving, and
Luther A. Carrier. Adora A. REYNOLDS born July 16, 1849 (place unknown) and
died February 28, 1925 in (place unknown). W. Irving CARRIER'S parents
were:
Asahel (or Asel) B. CARRIER born in 1804 in Lenox, Berkshire Co., MA and
died April 1, 1874 in Volney, Oswego Co., NY. He married Lydia P. CLARK
about 1825 in Volney, Oswego Co., NY. They had six children: Emily C., Ira
Robert, Lucy, Washington Irving, Mary, and Hannah. Lydia P. CLARK born
about 1806 in Lenox, MA and died August 18, 1887 in Volney, NY. Asahel B.
CARRIER'S parents were:
(THIS IS WHERE AN ELDER "CARRIER" RELATIVE OF MINE HAS LED ME TO BELIEVE
THAT THERE MAY BE A MIX-UP IN MY RESEARCH FINDINGS, AND THOSE OF OTHERS
BEFORE ME. SHE SAYS THAT THERE WERE ACTUALLY TWO ASEL CARRIERS, TWO IRA
CARRIERS and TWO OF A FEW OTHERS...ALL LIVING IN THE FULTON/VOLNEY, NY
VICINITY...THAT WERE OFTEN CONFUSED WITH EACH OTHER. CONSEQUENTLY, I CANNOT
BE CERTAIN OF THE FOLLOWING PARENTAGE):
Levi CARRIER born March 13, 1774 in Middletown, CT and died January 29, 1854
in Volney, NY. He married Persiss MILLER on November 22, 1792 in Middletown,
CT. They had eight children: Leman, Israel, Harvey, Levi, Asahel, Ira,
Rebecca, and Hannah. Persiss MILLER born about 1768 and died in
Massachusetts before 1825. Levi CARRIER's parents were:
(AGAIN, MY RESEARCH IS A BIT FUZZY WITH THIS GENERATION BY COUNCIL WITH THIS
ELDER RELATIVE. ONE SOURCE LISTS LEVI'S FATHER AS ISRAEL CARRIER born
before 1742 in England, married about 1765 in ?, and died ???. Burial is
also unknown. No reference as to who Israel's wife was. THE OTHER SOURCE
LISTS LEVI'S PARENTS AS FOLLOWS):
Israell (yes 2 l's) CARRIER born March 12, 1741/42 in Colchester, CT and
died (unknown date, place & burial). Israell married Mary CLARK (unknown
date and place of marriage). They had three children: Levi, Rebeckah, and
Israel. Mark CLARK born about 1742 and died (date & place unknown).
Israell's parents were:
Andrew CARRIER (Jr.) born February 2, 1705/06 in Colchester, CT and died
October 27, 1735 in Colchester, CT. He married Rebecca ROCKWELL on October
27, 1735 (place unknown). They had twelve children: Ruth, Joseph (Sr.),
Samuel, Israell (Sr.), Isaac, Rebecca, David (died in infancy), Thomas (died
in infancy), Thomas, Abigail, Margery, and David. Rebecca ROCKWELL was born
May 24, 1715 (place unknown) and died September 20, 1807 in Marlborough (?).
From there, two more generations back, all you THOMAS & MARTHA
CARRIER
descendents, know the rest. I'd appreciate any information that could
be
used to verify or disprove the vague areas above. This relative is very
firm in her "beliefs" about who are relatives and who aren't. I am firm
with my research back to Asel (or Asahel). I've located a number of graves
in the 16th School District Cemetary in the Town of Volney, Oswego Co., NY
for many of the early CARRIER family. This relative says that they aren't
related...they are just other people with the same names. She doesn't know
where "our" people are buried. My feeling is that when she says "they
weren't relatives" she means direct-line relatives -or- she could feel that
since she never heard of them or "knew" them...they must not be relatives.
Oh well, I don't want to get into a difficult discussion with her at her
stage of life. I've only recently met her-most of our "talks" are over the
phone. I've only had the pleasure of meeting her once and that was at her
husband's funeral. She is a dear lady, but she really puts me at a road
block. HELP!
Most of the information I have (going back from W. Irving Carrier) was
obtained from a typewritten carbon copy of a genealogy that was sent to my
by this elder relative on the Hart/Carrier/Vickery Families. It appears
that these were not prepared by this elder relative, but by Ethel May
Vickery Potter from the memoirs of Edith May Vickery Leonard. I've linked
some of the information therein to two seperate complied CARRIER genealogies
by George S. May 1978 and Ed Barnard 1993.
For those of you who have been patient enough to "read" this far...if you
are interested, I have a web-site
http://web.a-znet.com/debbiejo/ where I
have placed a picture of 4 generations of "my" CARRIER family...my mother
HELEN LaVANCHER, my grandmother BERTHA LaVANCHER CARRIER, my
great-grandfather FRANK R. CARRIER, and my great-great-grandmother ADORA
REYNOLDS CARRIER. I have been blessed with the "keeping" of my grandmothers
scrapbooks and diaries (which is what began this never-ending quest), along
with numerous photo albums and portrait shots. Someday, I hope to write a
book or post this all on the "net" ... I have a long way to go!
On a personal note-I am so glad to be "meeting" you cousins. The
"family"
that I've grown-up with is dwindling fast. There is great comfort in
knowing there is a large family still out there "at large"...we just need to
find each other. I'm so glad to be meeting you. :-)
