Hello to new and old friends,
I've been frustrated with my Carrier line for at least 10 years!
Taken from my plea on the Carrier Forum (Thanks Julia)
I have been unable to place my Carrier family, although I feel the VA
clan is probable. In Lancaster
Co. PA there are, in the 1790 and 1800 census, CARRIER (Jacob and
John, Catherine) . At the same time in Berks Co., Pa there are
Kerchner (German) that later changed the spelling to Carrier. This
name change occurred while living in eastern Ohio. To further make
matters worse, I know that ancestors of Thomas Carrier, John W.
Carrier and my Joseph Carrier were living in the same area of Ohio and
PA. Anyone out there with some idea?
Jacob Carrier, b. PA 1798, m Sarah Stephens, b PA 1798, daughter of
Catherine Stephen, b 1769 MD.
Children, George W; Catherine (Keck); Elizabeth (McKnight); Isabelle
(Jewell); Judson; Lousia
(Dean); Lyman.
Since we seem to have at least three Carrier lines, Welsh, English,
and French on the list, I though I would share with you so reference
material that I have used.
1. Helynn Carrier on going Study Paper of the Carriers. The major
study is of Thomas Carrier and Martha Allen Carrier. Helynn has a
secondary study of the John W Carrier line of Virginia. Both paper
studies include lots a *unconnected Carriers* Helynn is not on line,
but her mailing address is: Helynn Carrier, 601 South Baywood Avenue,
San Jose, CA 95128-3302. (indexed)
2. Carrier - Carryer and Allied Lines, Georgie Carrier Early
Armantrout, Gateway Press. 1985. This is an extensive study of the
John W. Carrier line Virginia. I purchased this book from the author
about 4 years ago.
Georgie Early Armantrout, 564 East Wolfe St., Harrisonburg, VA 22801.
indexed
3. The Coyer Clan and the Carrier Connection. 1982 John Edward
Armstrong. French line from western France to Quebec, Canada, New
York (St. Lawrence County) , Mass. Vermont,... with later emphasis on
Mr. Armstrongs branch of the family in Wisc., Dodge Co. (indexed)
4. Carrier a family published book by, Mary Pauline Carrier and Mrs.
Arthur Carrier. The family is out of the John W. Carrier's son, Henry
Carrier and his wife Mary Nichols. (not indexed)
5. The Lancaster County Historical Society holds the paper of Dr.
Fayette C. Eshelman, a Carrier researcher in the 1930's. The files
relate mostly to the Thomas Carrier line. They contain some
fascinating personal letters written both to and from Dr. *E*. To add
to your fun and frustration ...I give you part of a letter. This
letter concerns information about Thomas Carrier (born Conn, 1767) son
of Thomas and Martha and husband of Hannah and their 11 children.
"Thomas second child of Thomas and Hannah, was a millwright by trade,
but when he learned of the demand of saw mills along the Allegheny
River, he and his younger brother, Darius, then but 11 years, come
across the country (from Conn) with a horse and stopped at a point on
the Allegheny at the mouth of the Conowongo Creek, now the town of
Warren. This was in the year 1814. At Warren, Pa they bought logs,
made a raft, and went down river as far as Freeport. The boys
contracted for and built a bridge across the Buffalo Creek and after
that, followed the river to Pittsburgh, PA. My sister, Mrs John
Lawther, has a contract between the County Commissioner and Thomas
Carrier calling for so much for the building of the bridge and the
Carrier's were to furnish the grub and whiskey of the men.
Thomas disappeared and we never got any direct word on him except from
many Carriers in Tenn and Indiana who claimed their father or
grandfather came from PA.
Lucy (Thomas and Hannah) came with her parents in 1820 to Jefferson
County PA. We don't know what happened to her. Some say she was
captured by Indians and carried away. But we do know that she left
after a quarrel with her brother, Hiram. He teased her about being
dark. She took Hiram's best clothes and skipped out."
So Carrier researchers....Lucy is out there some were and Thomas
probably is mixed in with all the John W. Carriers in Tenn and
Indiana... and I still don't know how my Jacob fits into the Carrier
mix.
Good luck to us all!
