Hello list
In January I ran into Robert ? Robert1056(a)aol.com regarding Richard
Carrier son of Thomas.
He supplied this info on Richards wife Elizabeth Sessions which I
thought might be of
interest to Richards line.
He included info on the rest of the second generation but I've edited it
out as it's quite long.
If anyone wants the entire letter, contact me and I'll forward it
privately.
Robert's website link below is quite interesting as it goes quite a ways
back.
******************************************************************************************
Below is info on the 1st couple of Mass. generations of SPOFFORD's,
including
the parents of Elizabeth Sessions who married Richard Carrier. The
parents of
John Spofford, the 1638 immigrant from England, are somewhat obscure at
this
point, but it is likely that he was born in Yorkshire.
First Generation
--------------------------------------------------
1. John Spofford. Born 1612 in Yorkshire, England. Died About 1 Nov.
1678 in
Rowley, MA (?). Buried in Rowley, Mass..
This was the Father of the first generation of Spofford/Spafford in
America.
He came to America in 1638 and settled between Ipswich and Newbury,
Mass.
in April 1639. His will was made 8 October 1678 and probated (proved) 6
November 1678 (see Essex Deeds, 4 Ips.:222), obviously his death was
sometime
between these two dates. Record of marriage to Elizabeth Scott
probably destroyed
when the house of Rev. Ezekiel Rogers burned in Rowley, Mass. John is
undoubtedly buried in Rowley, Mass, but there is no gravestone marker.

&
Jewett, 1933; Spofford-Spafford Family History, Spofford, 1888; Rowley

Vol I -XIII.
He married Elizabeth Scott, daughter of Thomas Scott & Elizabeth Strutt,
Before 1647 in Rowley, MA. Born 1625 in Rattlesden, Suffolk, Eng..
Christen
18 Nov 1623 in Rattlesden, Suffolk, Eng.. Died 10 Feb 1690/1691 in
Bradford,
MA.
Pillsbury [2] shows baptism as 18 Nov. 1623, in which case, birthdate of
Elizabeth is questionable. Spafford Genealogy [1, p 37] indicates that
Elizabeth was 9 years old when she came to America in 1634, which would
make her birthdate about 1625.
They had the following children:
2 i. Elizabeth Spofford
3 ii. John Spaford
4 iii. Thomas Spofford
5 iv. Samuel Spofford
6 v. Hannah Spofford
7 vi. Mary Spofford
8 vii. Sarah Spofford
9 viii. Sarah Spofford
10 ix. Francis Spofford
Second Generation
--------------------------------------------------
2. Elizabeth Spofford. Born 14 Feb 1646/1647 in Rowley, MA. Died After
Apr
1724 in Andover, MA (?).
She first married Alexander Sessions, 24 Apr 1672 in Andover, MA. Born
1645
in Andover, MA (?). Died 26 Feb 1688/1689 in Andover, MA (?).
Last name in old records was spelled Sutchins. He was probably of
Andover,
Mass.
They had the following children:
11 i. Elizabeth Sessions (m. Richard Carrier 18 July
1694. [NEHGR 3:68])
12 ii. John Sessions
13 iii. Alexander Sessions
14 iv. Timothy Sessions
15 v. Samuel Sessions
16 vi. Nathaniel Sessions
17 vii. Josiah Sessions
18 viii. Joseph Sessions
19 ix. Abel Sessions
She second married ______ Low, After 1688 in Andover, MA. Born ? in ?.
Died 1719 in Andover, MA (?).

BTW, for documentation purposes, the full citation for
"Spofford-Spafford
Family History, Spofford, 1888" that I believe I referred to in the
stuff I
sent you is as follows:
"A GENEALOGICAL RECORD, INCLUDING TWO GENERATIONS IN FEMALE LINES OF
FAMILIES
SPELLING THEIR NAME SPOFFORD, SPAFFORD, SPAFARD, AND SPAFORD,
DESCENDANTS
OF JOHN SPOFFORD AND ELIZABETH SCOTT", By Dr. Jeremiah Spofford, Alfred
Mudge
&; Son, Boston, 1888.
If you have any questions re other sources, let me know and I'll check
further.
Also, for anyone interested, I am owner of SPOFFORD-L and we would
welcome
any and all interested Spofford/Spafford researchers.
Take care,
Bob
PS. I hope to get
http://members.aol.com/gamelbar updated later this
week
to reflect what I have recently determined to be the roots of John
Spofford,
the father of Elizabeth (Spofford) Sessions. Actually, I feel his
immediate
English ancestry is, at this point, still unknown and obscure, although
probably lie in Yorkshire. I'll keep you posted.
