I would like to share my findings with those searching Amariah Carrier. I have been
studing this line for a Carrier descendant and have no personal connection to Amariah. I
hope what I have compiled will be of help to those trying to figure out his ancestry. I
believe he may be a son of Amos, the brother of Amaziah but cannot prove it yet. Please
feel free to contact me with any questions.
Linda
I believe that Amariah was born about 1775/1776 in New York.
Genealogists on the internet have given a much earlier date for his birth, listing him as
the son of Amos and Phebe Kneeland Carrier and twin brother of Amaziah who was born in
1754 in Colchester, Connecticut. However, Amariah is not listed in the birth records of
Colchester with Amaziah. And, the early census records conclude that he was born much
later. In 1810 he was living in Berlin, Rensselaer County, New York where he was between
the age of 26 and 45 being born 1765-1784. It is worth mentioning here that Amaziah
Carrier in 1810 was living not far away in Stephentown, Rensselaer County lending credit
to my belief that the two were related. By 1820 Amariah had moved west and was living in
Harmony, Chautauqua County, New York. In this census he was listed as age 45 and up,
being born 1775 or before. In 1830 he was in Busti, Chautauqua County, New York was age
50-50, birth 1770-1780. And on 23 December of that year he bought lot 15 in Busti. On
November 18, 1836 he bo!
ught 200 acres of donation land in the eighth district, No. 1643 northeast Centerville,
in Crawford County, Pennsylvania from James White, no wife mentioned. No reading has been
found for him in 1840, however, his son, Henry Carrier was living in Randolph Township,
Crawford County, Pennsylvania by then. Living with him was an older couple who were
probably Amariah and Honor. Both were age 60-70 born 1770-1780. Then on May 19, 1842 he
sold the land to Peter Day of Rome Township. Amariah was living in Randolph Township, and
in the body of his deed is mentioned in quotes, "and Annor his wife" four
different times. In 1850 the census takers began to list everyone in the household.
Amariah was found living back in Busti, Chautauqua County, New York on 4 September 1850.
He was age 74 born in New York which would place his birth at 1775-1776. Marriage records
show he married Jerusha Hager on 31 January 1844. In 1850 she was age 70 born in
Connecticut. They were living between tw!
o of his children, Lucy Carrier Gage and Robert Carrier.
