I found in the Augusta Co., VA - Chalkey's Chronicles of the Scotch Irish in
Virginia, 1745-1800, which contains info on more than Scotch Irish persons,
where several men were held for over one year in a local jail for failure to
fight in the defense of the peoples, and whereas their reason was that it
was against their religious beliefs. I know that at least two of these
families continued to live out their lives in the area after their release.

I have a copy (from a book) of a document that was submitted to the Virginia
General Assembly for compensation for damages that the indians did to homes,
livestock, farmbuildings and othe property of early Frederick County
settlers. It was submitted on Feb. 20, 1759 by James Wood and Robert
Rutherford. It lists the following names: Jackson Allen, Joseph Allen, John
Blesard, Christopher Baumgarder, William Clark, William Carroll, William
Carfoot, John Carrier, John Dillener, John Funk, Joseph Funk, Adam Fox,
Benjamin Grible, Philip Lawrence, Thomas Looker, Andrew Mcckay, Richard
Morley, Jacob Moore, Daniel Newlan, Jr., Conrad Peters, Ulrick Peters,
Samuel Pritchard, Jacob Soneer, John Stewart, Jeremiah Smith, Moses Smuker,
Griffth Thomas, William White, Jr., Robert Pearis and Thomas Walters. The
original document is in the Winchester-Frederick County Historical Society.

I have noticed a lot of the people who began as Mennonite, changing
to
something else in early Shenandoah Co VA area.....I figure perhaps it had
something to do with the fact that Mennonites were not supposed to fight
in
wars. Then in 1750s the French and Indian War - there were attacks
made
in
Shen. Co VA area, and in 1760s Pontiac's War the Indians again
came from
the
"Ohio" area (Illinois, etc.) thru gaps in the mountains in
what is today
WVA
(upper Potomac area) and some made it to our neck of the woods.
(think of
the Painter family). I did not realize into I got into all this that our
early people had such a time with Indian attacks in 1750s, 1760s. So I
figure a lot of the Mennonites either moved closer to civilization, or
became something else in order to defend their families.
Has anyone else noticed this?
Mary
