Recently I've set it up so I get a copy of all rootsweb emails with the word carrier
in it.
About 75% refer to some postal mailing list or the word in a mailmans obituary.
About 5% are actually referring to the surname but a lot show up referring to an
occupation in England such as the list below.
I would assume that this name was applied there the same way we used
teamster in the U.S.
Nothing earth shaking but I thought I'd post it to see if the list still works and to
give Nicole something to cojatate over.
Neal

Subject: Gardner's Directory 1852: Miscellany
Here are the people listed under "Miscellany: Consisting of the Names of
Persons not arranged in the List of Trades and Professions".
Some are there because there were too few of them to list in a separate
category, e.g. farmers. Some are not quite up to the "Gentry" list (still
to be typed: the first shall be last), but not quite tradesmen either, such
as the assistant master at Magdalen (College) School and the professional
naturalist. It is surprising that only three chimney sweeps are listed -
I'm afraid this probably indicates the incompleteness of this directory.
And of course the ordinary labourers and factory workers are not listed at
all.
