Thanks Neal. I've been reading through the rootsweb archive CARRIER strings to get a
sense of the surname. Interesting crowd. I'm sure I'll find where my people slot
in the mix eventually. The hunt is half the fun.

Subject: Re: [CARRIER] A Carrier Newbie - John Hugh CARRIER abt 1830-1872 NY-IL-MN
Hello Dave in the woods,
I checked my records but didn't find any John Hugh listed.
I had some Carrier relatives on the river in that time frame but they lived
in Cape Vincent, Clayton and Alex Bay and ended up in Detroit.
As Ogdensburg is a bit north, he might have been French-Canadian but John
Hugh
sounds more Welsh or English.
Good luck in your search.

Hello Carriers
I just joined this list. I'm searching on my gr-gr grandfather John
Hugh CARRIER. He went by Hugh according to my aunt.
b. abt 1830
d. 21 Sept 1872 St Paul, Minnesota
obituary in St Paul states he was a native of Ogdensburg, New York
Moved to Galena, Illinois sometime before 1856
m. Julia Harriet POUND or POWER or POWELL late 1855 or early 1856 in
Galena, Illinois
Children - Hugh, Margaret and John born in Illinois
Moved to St Paul after 1860 census in Illinois and before 1862 when
daughter Katherine was born in St Paul followed by Julia and Alice
Parents unknown at this time
Lots of Carriers from New York had land grants in Illinois in the
1850s-1860s - don't know which if any are connected
I descend from John Hugh CARRIER through his daughter Katherine Amelia
CARRIER who married my great-grandfather, Henry A MONTGOMERY. I
currently live in Duluth, MN.
Anyone have anything on an Ogdensburg, NY connection?
Dave
