Thanks for the input Linda, The society page note was in the 1890's I
believe from the old Johnson City "Comet" newspaper. We now need to be
aware that the Carrier's in the Watauga and Elizabethton areas of Carter
county and some in the Washington and maybe Sullivan County could be from
the Mass/Pennsylvania line.. I believe this Carrier family owned the Empire
Furniture Co and at least one family member served as the Mayor Of
Elizabethton. Thanks to everyone for the input.

Subject: Re: [CARRIER] Pennsylvania Carriers in Tennessee
I have been working on the Carriers of East TN since 1977 and have 7
volumes
of paperwork. I do not believe these were any of our relatives.
Margaret
Shirley (Shawley/Sharle) married an Emmert of Carter Co. and an
Emmert
married
a Carrier (my grandfather) in late 1800's. I have also worked
on the
Shirleys of East TN (Carter/Greene/Sullivan Cos.) There is a John
Shirley in
that
bunch - but I never heard he was a doctor. What was the date of the
society
page note? I have two printed family histories on the Shirleys and
piles
of
paperwork. This is the German line of Shirleys (Sharle original
name
from
Germany) sometimes called Shawley/Skally/Sholly/Shally.
