Subject: Re: [ROGERS] "Kinfolks" by William Curry Harlee (Hartley?)
Well, let's just say that I have been having fun haunting the Billerica
Cemeteries. There are many Rogers here. This clan is so confusing as they
repeat names generation after generation. So here goes John was freeman in
Watertown in 1639 and Bond supposes that he was son of John who d. there,
1674 Dec 22. (80yrs) He was the baker previous written about. He had 10
children and four of his sons also had large families. He m. Patricia
Dawes of Boston. She d. 1663 April 21. and he m. 1669 July 6 widow
Elizabeth Brown of Boston. Ch: John b.1641 Dec 11; Mary b. 1643 Oct 26; m.
John French; Thomas; Abigail m. Arthur Warren of Chelmsford and d. a
widow, 1671 June 15.; Daniel; Nathaniel; Priscilla, m. 1682 Jan 19, Simon
Collidge of Watertown; Hannah, b. 1670 May 6 and d. May 24; Bethia d. 1672
Dec 29; Sarah d. 1676-7 Jan 9.
2 John the son of 1 John ... the story goes according to John Farmer who
was the town historian was killed by Indians, while resting in the
afternoon. He lived long enough to pull the arrow out of his jugular vein
which had pierced it, but he died holding the arrow in his hand. One woman
of the household escaped through a window and hid herself in some "flags "
or reeds. Another young female member of the family was scalped and left
for dead; however, she survived and lived for many years after. (Never
underestimate the stregnth of a Rogers woman :-)...) this happened in 1695.
John m. Mary Shed who d. 1688 and he remarried a Abigail Rogers widow of
William of Charlestown. Ch. Mary; John b. 1670-1 March and died April;
Samuel b. 1672; April 5 , Sarah; Eunice; John (again); Daniel, taken
captive by the Indians; Mercy, also taken captive, and Hannah.
Other interesting facts :
Thomas, son of John 2 and his 10 yr old son was also killed by Indians.
John Rogers Jr. was summoned to appear at court to testify against Martha
Carrier who was found guilty of witchcraft and hanged on Gallows Hill in
Salem Ma. Apparently, Martha had threatened many neighbors and town folk,
including John Rogers. She told him that one of his Cows would never give
any more milk and the cow in fact did die.
Here are some of the Rogers family names:John many, Thomas, Daniel,
Nathaniel,few Samuel(several), Zebidiah, Josiah,several, Micajah, William,
Hutchinson, Hermon, Calvin, Rebecca, Rebekah, Olive, Sibbel, Abigail, Cyrus,
Rhoda, Bizpiah, Sarah, Louise, Elvira, Charles, Hannah, Jeremiah, Harriet,
Nellie, Mehitable, Lucy Emily, Juliet, Mary, Jacob.
I hope this helps someone with their line or at least I hope you enjoyed the
history of this clan.
