This is turning out to be more complicated. First, a note on my sources. The dates of
marriages come from either 1 of 3 sources: a compilation of marriages through 1860 by
Annie Walker Burns; a compilation of marriages through 1926 by the Laurel Co Hist Soc; or
from the original marriage returns. Dates of birth and/or death mostly come from a series
of vital records kept by the county and forwarded to the state. KY's statewide
registration began 1 Jan 1911, however, there were earlier attempts at keeping vital
records. The latter records usually cover the years 1852-1861; 1874-1879 and then a few
years in the late 1890s and early 1900's (they vary from county to county).
There were three Thomas Carrier's living in Laurel Co KY in the 1850's. Thomas
Carrier md Linney Parker 20 Nov 1841 (AWB Marriages). The compilation by the Hist Soc
says Thomas Cain Jr md 21 Nov 1841. This couple had two children born in the 1850s and
both entries were listed as Carrier so I would assume Burns to be correct, nevertheless,
this needs to be checked. They do not appear in the 1850 or 1860 censuses for Laurel Co
that I could find (after a cursory check on Ancestry). I mentioned the births of two
children in Laurel Co: William C. Carrier b 27 Mar 1852 and Lucinda Carrier b. 1 Dec
1856. Many of these families left KY so it's possible they migrated before the 1860
census.
The second Thomas Carrier was so enumerated in the 1850 and 1860 censuses for Laurel Co.
In 1850 he was living with his parents, Stephen W. and Marilla Moore Carrier and was
listed as age 12. In 1860 he was 22 and living near Stephen and Marilla. He had a wife,
Sarah Ann, age 27 and three children: James S or T age 4; Robert L age 2; and WIlliam H
age 1. I believe this is the same couple as Jesse T. Carrier who married Sally Ann
Reams on 2 Aug 1855 in Laurel Co (Hist Soc). The compilation by AWB gives the date as 21
Aug and notes that S. W. Carrier was the bondsman. The birth of a child, James S. to
Thomas P. recorded in the vital records. Another child, Sarah E., was bon 15 Sep 1874 to
Jesse T. and Sarah A. Reams. Up to now, I had thought the parents of James S. and Sarah
E. were different people. I now think otherwise. I think the listing of Thomas P. as the
father was a mistake on the part of the clerk, but more research is necessary.
The third Thomas Carrier was enumerated in 1850 with his parents, William H. and Margaret
Gourley Carrier in Laurel Co. This Thomas was age 18. More importantly, his middle
initial was "P". He married Sarah Emily Hatcher 20 Mar 1856. He was 24 and she
was 21. He was born in Carter Co, TN and she in Laurel Co. This information is on the
marriage return included in the birth & death records. I suspect that the clerk mixed
this Thomas P. Carrier up with Jesse T. Carrier, but this is only a theory.
