There is A James Carrier with wife named Nancy J. in the Kansas 1880 census. They reside
in Pottawatomie Co.
Your query may have helped me. The census does not give James' middle name. If it is
Stephen, I am one step closer to linking my grandfather to his parents. My grandfather,
Stephen Douglas Carrier was married in 1895 in Anderson Co. Kansas to Laura Ellen Craig
(the Craig family is from Laurel Co. Ky also). They had two children, Elizabeth who died
shortly after birth, and Andrew Jackson Carrier, my father, in 1898. Stephen joined the
army during the Spanish American War and was killed in 1899. I have not completed my
search of NARA records for additional information on Stephen yet. Looking back though,
the best guess I have at the moment is that he is the Stephen listed as being the oldest
child (age 4) of James and Nancy Carrier in the 1880 census listing. It also indicates 2
additional sons, William age 2, and David age1 and a daughter Lucinda age 5 1/2 months.
Most importantly, all the children were born in KY. as was James and his parents. Nancy
was born in KY !
but her parents in N.C. I failed to note when the census taker completed his
Pottawatomie CO. census but at that time the James Carrier family had to have been in
Kansas less than 5 1/2 months. James' age is given as 23 in the census making his
birthyear of 1857. Nancy's age is given as 26.
Because I know so little about my Carrier background I would appreciate any info you have
on the Carriers of Laurel Co. KY. Finally, the name Stephen or Steven seems to occur with
way too much regularity with the last name carrier and I wonder if there is a trail back
to a grand patriach somewhere.
I look forward to hearing of any info you can provide me.
Steve
