Subject: Re: [ABBOTT] Mass & witches
Hi,
According to the book," Historical Sketches of Andover, Massachusetts"
Martha Carrier, the first person arrested in Andover for witchcraft ( May
28, 1692 ) was accused by Benjamin Abbot of Andover of bewitching him. He
was summonsed on July 30, 1692 to be a witness at her trial. She was found
guilty and hung on Aug. 19,1692.
Also, John Abbot was one of three selectmen who followed the orders of the
court at Ipswich and placed, on Sept. 27, 1692, the young children of Samuel
and Sarah Wardwell with other families after their father was hung for
witchcraft and their mother was imprisoned for witchcraft.
The Peabody Essex Museum in Salem,Ma has transcripts of whatever original
records survive. They can tell you if any Abbots were accused and for a
small fee will send you copies of the records. Their e-mail address:
www.pem.org, their address: East India Square, Salem, Ma., their phone
number: 978-745-9500.
Good luck,
Nancy Downey

Hi,
Does anyone know if there is any Abbott connection (no matter how
unimportant) to any of the witch trials?
Thanks
