"James Carrier became the second lynching victim. James' mother and brother were
among those killed at the shootout and he had been inside the house at the time. Carrier
was thought to have information about the gunmen in the shootout and was being pursued by
the mob. He entrusted himself to a white acquaintance to protect him but the man turned
him over as soon as the band of 30 armed whites arrived. Carrier was interrogated but
refused to name others besides Hunter. He was brought to the graves of his freshly
deceased brother and mother and shot several times. His body was found stretched across
one of their graves. The entire remaining black community of Rosewood narrowly escaped the
next day on a train to Gainesville and the rest of the town's structures were torched.
Today nothing remains of Rosewood save a sign and the charred remains of a few
buildings."
