I think you're right--Thomas's ancestors leaving France after the St.
Bartholomew's Day Massacre would have made sense, just because so many
people left France then.

The timing of this would be about right for Thomas's Grandfather or
G-grandfather to have left France for England.
If so it would have made the Salem Witch trial a cakewalk for Thomas.
