Neal, I don't know how much you know about my son Clayton but his father
(deceased now) was a full blooded Mohawk Indian who came from the
reservation in Deseranto, Canada. His mother was a Brant, relation to Joseph
Brant. I have been to the reservation with him ,in fact it was when I was
pregnant with Clay.( His 48th birthday was June 29th.So it's been awhile.)
I had a lot of information about the Indians who went to Canada after the
revolution but Glen found it all one day when I wasn't home & he destroyed
it.I do remember there were 13 canoe loads landing there & it must have
been very dificult. The info I had was so interesting & I don't believe I
ever quite forgave him for doing that. Clay's last name is Maracle & there
are a lot of Maracle's up there. When he was born I wanted him to have his
father's name & since I wasn't living with Glen at the time,of course I
never expected to go back with him. Everyone has a story & mine it quite
complicated. I really never knew how to put Clay' name in the family
tree, either. Maybe you can enlighten me on that. Hey, thanks for sending
Beatrice's obituary. I tried to send Condolences but they wouldn't go
through for some reason. Isabel

Most of is irrelevant but at the bottom in the "Seneca Surnames" Carrier is
included.

We are getting somewhere: in my last post I put the Peter Klingensmith and
many variables on the name spelling as well as the name being shortened to
PETER:
I'll repost that part here:
Elsewhere in the township lived John Clingersmith, a 26-year-old labourer
who was
possibly a son or a grandson of Peter. Other probable children joined the
Moravian Indian
mission at New Fairfield (Moraviantown), on the Thames River in the western
part of the
province. Among these were a white girl from the Grand River, Pahellau,
baptized in 1834
as Ketura and identified then as a member of either the Munsee or the
Mahican nation (her
mother's tribe), and her brother, also from the Grand River, Peter
Clensmith
(Klingersmith), who was baptized in 1844 as John Peter. He and his family
thereafter used
Peter as a surname. Other relatives, identified variously as Clingersmith,
Clinansmith,
Clingsmith, and Clinger, joined the mission at later dates.
Now, I have a copy of the Six Nation's Censuses from 1901 which I am
searching and found some possible relatives with last name PETER as per
name
change above (see the seemingly well documented Biography & more in
previous
post)
Here are the possible names I found for 1901: Grand River
(actually found these censues posted in genforum awhile back)
Six Nations Census 1901
------------
Six Nations of the Grand River (Ohswé:ken, Brant, Ontario) was founded 1784
on land that was granted to Mohawk Chief Joseph Brant following the
American
Revolution. It was to serve as a new home to members of the Iroquois Six
Nations Confederacy (Mohawk, Oneida, Onondaga, Cayuga, Seneca, Tuscarora)
who as a result of the Revolution had been displaced from their ancestral
homeland in upstate New York.

IROQUOIS SURNAMES
The following page contains a list of 624 Iroquois or Haudenosaunee
surnames
collected from the 1901 Canadian census for six reserves located in Canada.
Although five of these reserves (Ahkwesahsne, Kahnawake, Kanehsatake,
Tyendinaga, and Wahta) are inhabited primarily by members of the Mohawk
nation, the sixth and largest of the reserves, Six Nations of the Grand
River, also represents members of the Seneca, Cayuga, Onondaga, Oneida, and
Tuscarora nations.
NOTE "PETERS" in following:
3) Original Surnames
Many Iroquois surnames appear to have come into being in the same manner
that European ones did: as the result of by-names. A by-name identifies who
you are, usually with reference either to who your father is (e.g. HENDRICK
or BRANT, JOHN or JOHNSON, ISAAC or ISAACS), where you are from (e.g. HILL,
ENGLAND, WOODS), what your ethnic background is (e.g. SCOTT, FRENCH), or
what you do for a living (e.g. MILLER, SMITH).
Surnames of the first category, patronyms, are hard to differentiate from
their European counterparts, since Iroquois patronyms would have involved
taking on one's father's English name rather than his Iroquois name (i.e. a
surname HENDRICK or HENRY rather than TEIONHOHAKARAHWEN). European first
names that were used by the Iroquois inevitably led to patronymic surnames
that are inherently indistinguishable from European ones (e.g. JACOBS,
PETERS), but a few Iroquois renderings of European names have been
maintained, for example SAWATIS ("John", from an early Iroquois rendering
of
the French name "Jean Baptiste"). The origin of several of these patronyms
is obscured by the fact that they have long fallen out of usage. For
example, Brant and Cryn were once common European pseudonyms among the
Iroquois, but now they occur only as the surnames BRANT and GREEN. The
common surname MONTOUR may have similar origins, perhaps as a corruption of
the Dutch name Wouter (equivalent to 'Wa!
lter'), which was already in use by Mohawks at Canajoharie in late New
Netherland times.
A few Iroquois surnames reference specific settlements, for example ALBANY,
HEMLOCK, RAQUETTE and MOUNT PLEASANT (all places in New York State). Others
give a more vague geographic reference, for example HILL and SUGARBUSH.
Further the poster has:
D. Surnames
The 624 surnames are given in alphabetical order, and next to each entry
you
will find a key that shows the location of people bearing that surname in
the 1901 census. The codes and locations for the various reserves are
outlined below.
[ a ] = Ahkwesáhsne (St. Regis), St. Regis Reserve, Huntingdon, Quebec.
[ c ] = Kahnawà:ke (Caughnawaga), Sault-Saint-Louis, Châteauguay, Quebec.
[ o ] = Kanehsatà:ke (Oka), L'Annonciation, Deux-Montaignes, Quebec.
[ s ] = Ohswé:ken (Six Nations), Tuscarora, Brant South, Ontario.
[ t ] = Tyendinaga (Tyendinaga), Tyendinaga e-8, Hastings East, Ontario.
[ w ] = Wáhta (Gibson), Gibson and Freeman, Muskoka, Ontario.
Thus the entry "ADAMS (a14, c10, s7)" indicates that the Surname ADAMS was
held by 14 individuals at the St. Regis Reserve, ten individuals at the
Kahnawake Reserve, and seven individuals at the Six Nations Reserve in
1901.
Wherever possible, variants of the same surname have been grouped together
as a single entry.
PETER (a10, c3, s5)
PETERS (a3, s11)
No O'Brien found, No forms of CLINGER, CLINGNSMITH, and the various
spellings found.
This is a huge document when combined for all districts, so the districts
might be different numbers as I use find on page tool. if you need a
closer
look, find the documents in a serch at genforum or let me know which
specific one you need or neighbors names or associated surnames, and I'll
try to find the specifics rather than general data posted here.
For example there are quite a few VANEVERY names.
There are also ATKINS names (for Ken "Lonewolf" Long who posted elsewhere
here)
There is also a
JOHN, Peter Household
Kahnawà:ke (Caughnawaga), situated to the south of Montreal, was
established
as a Jesuit Mission outpost in the late seventeenth century. Although
Mohawks comprised the overwhelming majority of Kahnawà:ke's early settlers,
Onondaga and Oneida migrants would appear also to have contributed to the
mission's early population.
The census taker for Kahnawake wrote in French, so an English translation
has here been given wherever possible (e.g. Cultivateur > Farmer,
Constructeur de Ponts > Bridge Builder, etc). Where a translation is
doubtful or where a word may have had a different meaning, the original
French has also been given in brackets.
