Hello Dave,
I've added your line into the spreadsheet, thanks for the info.
>From the N.G. site they say:
"Transfer your results to Family Tree DNA and purchase an additional test to
be performed upon the sample that you already submitted. The cost of a
mitochondrial DNA upgrade test is: $89. Should you choose this option, click
on the "Learn more" link at the bottom of your results page. Note that
Family Tree DNA is separate from the Genographic Project and is not governed
by the same rules of anonymity. This option is only available as an upgrade,
to be purchased AFTER you have received results from a Y-chromosome test."
It would help if you transfer your data to the Carrier project at FTDNA so
they could be compared to any others that get posted.
I see that N.G. does the 12 marker test but it might be best to wait and see
how your makers match to any new ones from either the W. John line or the
Thomas Carrier line. I know that FTDNA saves samples for 25 years but I
don't know if they do that for the N.G. project. If they do and you want
upgraded tests you don't have to resample, they can run further tests on the
held samples.
I agree, it would be nice to find a common ancestor back in the old country.
Take care,
Neal

Neal, Your work on this project is very impressive. If you want to fill in
the questionmark on my line, my mother's first name is Henrietta. Not to
nitpick but Una's last name is spelled with an ie, Lillie. That spelling
has been consistent for many generations.
I don't think testing my maternal DNA would get the Carrier project any
further, so far I can only confirm the mother line to William Henry
Carrier's wife, Diana Susan Bligh Carrier.
Best wishes to all the participants,
Judy

Hi Neal,
Dave Carrier here; I haven't posted in a while, so my line isn't listed in
your new project. Would you mind adding it?
W. John> W. John Jr> Thomas T> William H.>John Henderson> Stephen

I did do the Y chromosome testing with the National Geographic project, but
will have to pull the file to review how many markers were used. I may want
to run another test with more markers if we're on to something. I, too,
would like to see if the Virginia Carriers have a common ancestor with the New
England Carriers "across the pond."
Thanks for keeping the list going and all of your work.

Hi Neal,
Great job setting up the genealogy table for DNA testing. I have brothers,
nephews and grand nephews on my line so we could find someone to test. Do
not forget Kathleen Hunt's genealogy since she published her genealogy on
her "Heretic's Daughter" website. It is Thomas, Thomas, Thomas, Darius,
Euphrastus, Hobart Garfield, Audrey Blanche, ?, Kathleen Hunt

The Maternal DNA test is available for both males and females, to
uncover information about your mother, and her female ancestors.
A single test allows you to verify:
- if 2 females are possibly related
- your suggested geographic origin
- your maternal deep ancestral ethnic origin

Nicole,
You could test for your maternal ancestry via the mtDNA test. Doesn't give
your lineage but gives you some idea as to the "far back" source of your
genes.

Hi Neal,
I've gotten a little farther on my Carrier males since I last wrote. Nellie
Carrier had a brother Fred who had a son Maxwell born about 1903. I have
not gotten further on Maxwell as of tonight.
Here's my line, tho its not all males: Thomas - Richard- Amos -
Amaziah-Samuel Churchill-William Henry- Nellie Carrier-Una Lillie (my
grandmother). Nellie's brother Fred had a son Maxwell, so if I could find a
Carrier male descendant of Maxwell, we could test that line if I understand
this correctly. Of the other 2 brothers, Herbert was childless and Willis
had daughters as far as I know as of now.
By the way, in cleaning my Mom's place for her move to a smaller place I
came up with a great picture of William Henry and Susan Diana Bligh Carrier
with all 5 children. Looks to be taken about 1880 judging from the ages of
the kids.

Randall,
So far no one has found a connection for W. John of Virginia and
Thomas/Martha of Mass.
I'm hoping that if we can get a DNA project going we might be able to link
this line up back in merry ole England.

Sure is an interesting but confusing subject Judy.
Yes, to research the Carrier line the sample has to come from a male
Carrier.

Has anyone on this list found anyone testing DNA for our family?
Has anyone seen a data base for the same?
Would anyone be interested in participating in one?

Hey Neal,
I have already been Y-chromosome tested for the "Smith" surname & I'd hafta
see how much the Mitochondrial DNAwould cost for the same tests
If it was affordable, count me in!

What lab did they use?
Can you see the results of the others tested?
How many markers?
What's your Haplogroup?, just curious.
Do you have a close Carrier relative that might be interested?
mtDNA tests seem to be a little less than the Y-chromosome.

a change in Lab nomenclature.
***A value of "0" for any marker indicates that the lab reported a
null value or no result for this marker. All cases of this nature are
retested multiple times by the lab to confirm their accuracy. Mutations
causing null values are infrequent, but are passed on to offspring just like
other mutations, so related male lineages such as a father and son would
likely share any null values.

National Geographic has a DNA project going and they use this lab.

Why so many? The National Geographic project only uses 12 and I think the
FBI go for 13 or so.

Aha, this shows Basque genes and hence haplogroup R1b1b2 (R1b1c) were the
most representative of Paleolithic European population. So your Smith
ancestors were former cavemen who took up sheep herding in the Basque
region? Do you have an affinity for wooley critters?

That's why I've shied away from this subject, it seems to get so dam
complicated. I just bought a book on DNA and will see what I can learn.

hhhhhhhhmmmmm what's he hiding? Tell him that Medicare wants him to take an
aides test.

Especially with the economy like it is, I'm afraid this will kill a lot of
interest in it.

<> Why so many? The National Geographic project only uses 12 and I think the

Well, I have a LOT of matches at 12. A couple at 25. A few at 37 & 1 at
67.(64/67)
99+% of a common ancestor w/i the last 4 generations...
I have a "brick wall" at my G-gfather, John J. Smith (b. ca 1882/3) & I'd
like to get a little farther back on the paternal side of my family. I have
a probable match from a Scot - Phillip Smith (b. ca 1790), but I can't find
a paper trail from Phillip to John J. I figured the MORE markers to compare
to, the closer I'd get to my past...

Most of my DNA match links are to Scotland & Ireland...some to England
...and some are ALL over the planet...
Russia, Mexico, Australia, France, Spain, Germany & even Laos...
<>Do you have an affinity for wooley critters?<>
He asked, "SHEEPISHLY..."
LOL...Nope. I don't own a beret, either...
But I AM a meat-eater...

Yeah, it is! I took genetics in college in the 70s & I was pretty much
TOTALLY lost...
The only way I got thru was to MEMORIZE my lecture notes!
<> hhhhhhhhmmmmm what's he hiding? Tell him that Medicare wants him to take

Yeah, right...

Agreed...only the die-hards who aren't burdened with heavy mortgages or who
don't have 401k plans will probably jump on board...
Maybe we could get a Group Rate...

A huge sale at Family Tree DNA ends tonight.
FTDNA has a special deal right now until September 30. The most popular
test, 37 marker y-DNA is only $119 instead of $189. For $189 you can get
the y-DNA plus the mtDNA tests done. There is already a Carrier project set
up here:
http://www.worldfamilies.net/surnames/carrier/home
but there is no project administrator at the moment. (Terry Barton is the
default administrator on all the projects.) It will only be truly
meaningful if every participant posts his family tree so the closeness of
lines can be observed.
My brother has ordered a kit, so there will be at least ONE participant.
Here is the full list of test prices:
Due to popular demand Family Tree DNA is extending its Sizzling Summer Sale
until September 30th! This promotion is geared toward bringing new members
to your projects by offering the following big incentives:
Product Promotion...Original... Sale
Y-DNA12 Free mtDNAi...$189...$99
Y-DNA25Free mtDNA...$238...$148
Y-DNA37Reduced...$189...$119

Hi Neal,
I'm just learning a bit about DNA testing. It looks like I would need to
find a male descendant of William Henry Carrier (1833-1906) to participate.
His daughter, Nellie Mae Carrier, is my gg grandmother. William Henry had 3
sons, Herbert Eugene b 1855, Willis M 1858-1924 and Fred Ernest b 1874 - I
am still working on those 3.
