Beginning March 2nd, 2020 the Mailing Lists functionality on RootsWeb will be discontinued. Users will no longer be able to send outgoing emails or accept incoming emails. Additionally, administration tools will no longer be available to list administrators and mailing lists will be put into an archival state.
Administrators may save the emails in their list prior to March 2nd. After that, mailing list archives will remain available and searchable on RootsWeb
I received this from Linda and since it has some good points, thought it was worth
passing on. See my message below.

Neal, thanks so much for the poem and reminder. In furtherance of the
marking of photos, please let folks know they should try to use a nonacid pen
for this purpose (most office supply places and craft stores carry them).
Also, never use ball point pens. They bleed through the often porous older
papers. Additionally, care should be taken to write as close to the edge as
possible, or at least on the back of a lesser important part of the photo.
I received a box of old photos that had not been handled as above, and some
of them are nearly ruined. Thankfully, I found a restorer in my area and
could have them fixed or reproduced.

For the last few days I've been adding some pictures to my web site and have
learned a bit from it. Thought I'd pass it on and if anyone has an easier method,
let me know.
1. I scan the pictures into a bitmap file *.bmp
Some of the pictures are stuck to scrapbook paper and I don't want to damage
them trying to remove them so I end up with a scrungy image.
2. The only program I have found that can cut out a section of a bit map file is the
Sun's Star Office program. Using that, I open the scanned bitmap, crop out the
good part and resave it as a new bitmap.
3. Opening the new bitmap with a paint program (right now the W-95 version) I
can type in the names and date of the picture on the image. Make sure you
have room for this, this is where the cropping comes in handy. You can select a
font that looks antique enough for added affect. Then save this file as another
bitmap (in case you screwed up your labelling like I did a couple of times).
4. Then you should convert the bit map to a jpg file to save computer space. A
132kb bit map will compress down to an 8kb jpeg file. I use Seattle filmworks
software (free) to convert to jpeg.
If anyone else has a different method or experiences, I'm sure the list would be
interested. Now, back to doing my income taxs.

I started with 3.2 and last upgraded to 6.0 but then within 6 months 7
was out. I do not like to have obsolete software and it burned me they
came out so soon with the new version. I have had absolutely no
problems, but do have a problem with sending my database in for them to
sell in perpetuity never to be updated. I am really glad to have World
Connect from Rootsweb and recently became a monetary contributor. Have
not sent in my database yet, but have finally gotten my database
researched enough not to be embarassed by it. (Of couse it will never
be complete or completely accurate, but I can withdraw and update it
anytime.)
It is nice to have choices.

Food for thought
Hi,
Received this from another list I am on, it made me stop & think
about the pictures that I haven't had time to ID yet--think I had better
make the time!
STRANGERS IN THE BOX (Author Unknown)
Come, look with me inside this drawer,
In this box I've often seen,
At the pictures, black and white,
Faces proud, still, and serene.
I wish I knew the people,
These strangers in the box,
Their names and all their memories,
Are lost among my socks.
I wonder what their lives were like,
How did they spend their days?
What about their special times?
I'll never know their ways.
If only someone had taken time,
To tell, who, what, where, and when,
These faces of my heritage,
Would come to life again.
Could this become the fate,
Of the pictures we take today?
The faces and the memories,
Someday to be passed away?
Take time to save your stories,
Seize the opportunity when it knocks,
Or someday you and yours,
Could be strangers in the box.
I don't know what programs the list members use to maintain their family trees.
I started using Family Tree Maker (version 3.sumpin) several years ago but
gradually grew dissatisfied with it.
After joining the local genealogy club (The Mohawk Valley Genealogy Club) which
was somehow associated with Parsons Family Origins and receiving a free copy
of Family origins 6.x, I have been a strong fan of that program ever since.
I now have version 8.03 to maintain my data base, export a gedcom to PAF the
Mormon genealogy program which is free for the downloading.
Each program has it's advantages, FO has a few nicer bells and whistles and
PAF does a much nicer web page.
So, when I saw this message below I figured I'd pass it on for the benefit of
anyone trying to decide what program to buy.
Neal
ps: I think FO is now in the Mattel group now.

Subject: Family Tree Maker
Hi Chatterers,
There was a message on DPS the other day about Family Tree Maker. Below are
some messages on the English Fens mailing list. I apologise to Rob for the
length, but I think our members would be interested in this topic.
Martin Edwards is the Chairman of the Cambridgeshire Family History Society.
Martin wrote originally:-
"Dear Listers,
I have in the past recommended the use of Family Tree Maker software but at
the current time, with the Version 7.0 upgrade, find that I have to retract
that recommendation. I can no longer recommend Broderbund software or any
other of the Mattel Group. I have been a very keen and ardent supporter of
this product but realise that there is a total lack of support for it. I
have been in the computer industry for many years now (since 1968) and have
recommended software on many levels. My integrity does not allow me to
maintain that support if I believe the product does not warrant it. As I
have recommended the use of this product to many of you I feel it only fair
to now retract that recommendation.
Martin Edwards
Replies to Martin are as follows:
1.
"I am sick and tired of software companies that charge to resolve problems
with THEIR software. It is time that these companies are sent a message!
No
support... no BUY... Broderbund is not the only company with a policy such
as this...TOO many others are taking this route and I feel that leaves us
open to receive EVEN more inferior products! They hit us once in the cost
of
the product and then again in the support department when we have difficulty
operating it. This should be figured into the PRICE of software rather than
hit the user afterward. This would ensure a GOOD product one with fewer
glitches since every CALL would equal dollars for them. SUPPORT is key to a
companies success or should be... I boycott all that choose this route (with
the exception of Microsoft since we do need them unfortunately.) Microsoft
will be on my ban list should someone come out with something better or
equal
to the operating system."
2.
"I heartily concur with Martin's analysis of Family Tree Maker 7.0 and the
level of support that a user receives from that company.
I started using Family Tree Maker software sometime before version 4.0, but
I cannot today identify just when. Version 7.0 will be my last upgrade . .
. . I have started looking for a better product that come with support and
is truly capable of preparing reports. Does any one have any suggestions?
As for support from Broderbund . . . . Well, I think their motto is "Send
us your money, but don't call us if it doesn't work."
3. from Martin Edwards again:
"Dear Listers and Lou,
I have been asked why I felt it necessary to write a withdrawal of my
recommendation so below are my reasons.
I have used Family Tree Maker since version 2.2 and was very happy with it.
The upgrade to version 7.0 has left my family tree of 15 years
inaccessible. Having contacted FTM early last week I just received an
automated response. I emailed again last Friday asking whether I should
de-install 7 and re-install version 6 or would my files have changed. So
far they have not had the courtesy to reply. At the same time I purchased
Lewis's Gazetteer's from them on CD which I am happy with but I was unhappy
that they no where to my knowledge state that the carriage charge was 17.33
pounds sterling, as much as the CD in fact. The first I knew was when the
carrier arrived. If I was not in the job I am in where I earn a good salary
I wonder how I would have felt being landed with a bill that I couldn't pay
but on the other hand if I didn't pay it not being able to own what I had
bought.
So far the support service I have received with my problem is totally
unsatisfactory and currently my research, the Cambridgeshire FHS database
and several other notes files are totally useless to me and the people I
help. All that was necessary was an acknowledgement that they were dealing
with the problem and that I either needed to stay as I was or downgrade. In
the computer industry, of which I am part, I know it takes no time at all
to make that judgement. I also know that if this was a problem I, or my
staff, were dealing with, then it would not have gone on for so long.
As I am frequently asked for recommendations and have time and time again
recommended FTM I decided that it was unfair to all to mislead people. I
have a degree of integrity and hence my email to the list. I think it would
have been fairly crass of me if I had not done so. I would not want to see
somebody else's research disappear in the manner that mine has. I will
manage to retrieve it but it does not look like with the help of FTM.
4.
"My sentiments exactly.
"You are only a customer: You only deserve an automated response." I
believe Broderbund has this motto inscribed over its corporate entrance. I
used to recommend it as a good company.
5.
Listers,
I will add something else to this list of shortcomings. You cannot rely on
their census CD's of the census in the USA. On one of the South Carolina
Census CD Roms there were 11 counties missing. My friend and I checked it
out. I used my census index book and asked her to look up people from each
county that I found in the book index. When we finished there were names in
11 counties that were not on the CD. I don't purchase any of their software
or CD's.
