Hi List!
It is a beautiful morning up here in Northern
Minnesota! Thanko-you for the link to the Andre
Carrier page.
http://andre-carriere.qc.ca/
When on that page if you click on "Genealogie des
Carrier" you can click on English on the top left.
Read the story about "Peirre Jamme dit Carriere et
M-Magdelenne Barbary" and you will learn about a
French soldier JAMME fighting in Canada in the 1600's.
It will tell about his fellow soldiers calling him
"dit Carriere"! Another interesting story is about his
new wife being kidnapped by indians and it was many
years before she was returned! According to oral
history, that is how my family changed from JAMME to
CARRIERE / CARRIER.
Another lister had mentioned the name CURRIER. Have
you ever seen the book "THE COYER CLAN AND THE CARRIER
CONNECTION"? I have not seen the book in a long time,
but if memory serves me correctly, it was written by a
man from WI. They had the Currier spelling in that
book. I might know someone that still has a copy of
that book, if you need something looked up. I could
check. I know that the Carrier line in that book did
not appear to connect to my line.
Have a great day!!!!

Hi Theresa and all our French Canadian cousins,
To show my ignorance of things French, I have a few questions.
1. what does dit mean?
2. does anyone have knowledge of the source or meaning of the
Carrier/Carriere surname in France? and is it linked to the Italian
version Carriero?
3. could the appearance of the Carrier name in England be tied to the
Norman invasion for sure or to the Huguenot exodus from France?
4. is there any historical involvement of Carrier's in the Huguenot
situation?
Just a shot in the dark but figured might be worth a try.
thanks
Neal

Edward moved to USA with all of his children, but all
of a sudden he has a new wife, Ida Beaupre. Did Sarah

marriage to Edward - Arthur, Laura, & William. All the
children went by the Carrier name when grown up.
Ida Beaupre Carrier was married to ? Beaupre before
she married Edward Carrier. Her maiden name is
unknown. She was related in some way to Mae Bruard.
Can anyone fill in the missing link?
Did Edward and Sarah have any children other than
Daniel?
I have the children of Edward and Ida as:

A correction on my roll call contribution. Anson himself was not irascible
as far as I know. His obscurity at times just makes researchers trying to
find out about his that way. Apologies to his other descendants.
Grady Loy
Hello All ("Bon jour et comment allez vous" to the French side of the family
"dit Carriere").
I am a ggg grandson of the irrascible Anson Carrier b ca 1812 Floyd Oneida
NY. Anson's whereabouts after that and indeed his parents names are not
know though there is gret hope that a connection can be made to one of the
elder three sons of John Carrier (Floyd censuses 1800, 1814, 1820, 1830 b.
ca 1760). These three sons (b. 1780 - 1790) were no longer in Floyd in 1820
though a younger son of John named Elias Carrier (b. 1790-1800) is (he was
there in 1830, 1840 and I think 1850 but in 1830 he does not have a son the
right age for Anson living with him. Anson shows up according to Lehlah
Achey in 1834 or 1835 in one of the state censuses I think about the same
time as John Carrier disappears). Anson and Elias lived very near each
other in Floyd in 1834 and 1840.
My best guess is that Anson's father died between 1812 and 1820 and his
mother remarried before 1820. Another possibility is that Anson's father
went another place and that Anson for whatever reason returned in 1834 to
Floyd.
Anson shows up in the 1840 census and then he is gone in 1850. We have
searched all variants of the name. Two of Anson's sons, Abner and Milton
remained in Floyd and worked on the farms of other Floyd residents. Abner
was back in Floyd in 1860 and I think was there either by himself or with
younget son Albert in 1870 as well.
Anson married Jerusha Eddy (b. 1810) daughter of John Eddy and Mary Aiken
Eddy. Mary Aiken was said to e daughter of Edward Aiken of New Hampshire
but that is not confirmed. She is certainly part of that Edward Aiken's
family (which was very large at that point). John Eddy apparently came to
New York just after 1800 from a stoppover in Vermont with his brothers Seth
and Abiel Jr. John Eddy lived near Elias and John Carrier and later Anson
Carrier. Eddy records confirm that John's daughter Jerusha married a
"Currier".
Anson and Jerusha had children (I am going by memory) Milton, Henry, Abner,
Julia, Martha, Ellen, Myron and Albert (I amy have a granddaughter there
with the daughters). Their particular information is all very nicely
displayed at Neal Carrier's site. My ancestor, Myron Carrier, after a stint
in the Union army and a stay in Libby prison (incformation courtesy of my
cousin and fellow list member Sylvia Silva) went to Nebraska possibly via
Michigan and Wisconsin with brother Abner Anson Carrier. He went back to
New York after a couple of year where his wife (Harriet Jane Lindsay of
Russia and Holland Prospect) died and he left his two daughters I presume
with the Lindsays. It is not clear after that and he may or may not be the
Myron who homesteaded in Michagan though a grand neice of his said he was
there. He ended up in the 1880's as a frontier medical doctor (not clear
where he got his training) in Jerome and Camp Verde, Arizona. His daughter
Eleanor, soon after coming to Arizona with her sister Ethel, married my
great grandfather William Loy who was a resident of that area. Myron
Carrier had another family by second wife Melvina Munds.
Some points I think might be of interest:
The Carriers (Anson's group and other lines) favor a couple of interesting
names. Anson is one. I undertand the Seymour Carrier line in Floyd also
had an Anson leading us to believe the families are not so distantly related
as all that. The name Myron was also shared by a Carrier and Civil war hero
in a nearby Pennsylvania county and the name Milton as Virginia Carriers
will know was used in their family as well.
That's enough talk from me. Does anyone know what might have happened to
John Carrier'S three sons or otherwise who Anson's parents might be. Thanks
Grady
Hi Neal,
My name is Skip and I am new to this list. A quick
meaning of Dit is "known as". May I suggest that some
of the readers might find it interesting to read a
whole dialog on the dit subject? Go to
www.genforum.com
click on "countries"
click on "Canada"
in the section:
"Messages Posted"
Jump to # -----"
type in the # 3202
Click on "go"
There you will find a whole conversation of Dit names,
including how some of the Quebec Carrier's became
known as Carrier's. If you find a person you'd like to
contact, click on their name at the top of their
posting and the site will give you the person's e-mail
address and a list of all their genforum postings. A
Carolyn Racicot explained the dit Carriere to me on
that site. I contacted her and surprise, surprise! she
is a counsin and she had my family back to the 1600's.
She also told me about an Andre Carrier web site that
had great information on it. Don't have the URL for
that site handy.
Hope the list finds this info interesting!

Jean
Hi Ginny,
Thanks for your note. I think I corresponded with you a couple of years ago
or so - anyway, your name looks familiar. I've also corresponded with Helynn
Carrier - she has sooo much info, and is so good about sharing.
I have somewhat different info than you - most notably, Nancy died some time
after 1850, as she is shown on the 1850 census, together with her husband,
Thomas. I believe Nancy died in Laurel Co., and Thomas died in Pulaski Co.
in May 1860, where he had moved with his married daughter (don't remember
which one - would have to look it up) after Nancy's death.
On the 1850 census, Thomas and Nancy are shown living next-door to their son,
William, and his family, as shown below:
William Carrier 43 M Farmer 500 Tennessee
Margaret 37 F "
Thomas P. 18 M KY
S. M. 16 M "
John H. 14 M "
Elizabeth 12 F "
V.C. ?? 10 F "
Martha 8 F "
Rebecca 6 F "
L. Jane 4 F "
Charles 1 M "
Thomas Carrier 86 M Farmer Virginia
Nancy 63 F Tenn.
(Note, Nancy's age could very well be 65, as the enumerator's writing isn't
clear; also, William's 10-yr-old daughter could be K.C. instead of V.C. -
ornate initial, hard to read)
I have the following children for Thomas and Nancy:
William, b.c. 1807, TN, m. Margaret Gourley, 22 Sep 1829, Carter Co., TN
Abigail, b.c. 1809, TN, m. William Johnson, 17 Sep 1831, Laurel Co., KY
John C., b. 4 Dec 1811, TN, m. Catharine Johnson, 6 Feb 1833, Laurel Co., KY,
d. 13 Aug 1865, Laurel Co., KY (this is my line)
Stephen W., b. 1813, TN, m. Marilla Moore, 12 Jun 1837, Laurel Co., KY
Jesse, unk birthdate and place, m. Barthenia Gedion Comstock, 21 Mar 1843,
Laurel Co., KY, d. 1850
Nancy, b.c. 1824, TN, m. William H. Langley, 5 Dec 1843, Laurel Co., KY
I got some of my info from Norma McClure, of Miami, OK., and, of course, most
of it from the census. Also, since William is shown as marrying in Sep. 1829
in TN, and Abigail is shown as marrying in Sep. 1831 in KY, I conclude the
whole family probably moved from Carter Co., TN, to Laurel Co., KY, about
1830, especially since William's oldest son was born about 1832. In fact,
the 1830 census shows: Thos. Carrier, 2 males 8-10, 2 males 10-15, 2 males
15-20, 1 male 50-60; 1 female 8-10, 1 female 15-20, and 1 female 40-50.
Thanks so much for your input - I'll keep it with my Carrier file.

Janet Paxton

Hello Neal and All,
My brick wall is the same one my cousin Janet shared. I've seen some
interesting followups from some names and sources I recognize, but I thought
I'd see what everyone thinks about my latest conclusions:
Thomas Carrier, b. Virginia (anywhere between 1764 and 1788, depending on the
source), d. between 1850 and 1860, Pulaski County, KY; m. Nancy Hatcher, b.
about 1787, d. after 1850 (listed in 1850 census of Laurel County, KY)
My wall is proof of Thomas's parents (I descend from Thomas's son William H.
Carrier who married Margaret Gourley, 23 September 1830).
I believe Thomas's parents were John Carrier, Jr., Mary (May?) Moreall
(Morrell?).
John Carrier, Jr., Mary Moreall were married in 1773 in Shenandoah Co., VA
If Thomas was born in 1764, the 1773 marriage doesn't sound right. However,
I believe the only source of the 1764 birth year for Thomas, is the 1850
census, in which he is listed as 86 years of age. The 1830 and 1840 censuses
of Laurel County list Thomas as between "50 to 60" and "60 to 70"
respectively. For Thomas to jump from 16 to 26 years of age in one 10 year
census run is obviously in error. However, the microfilm copy I used for the
1840 census was damaged, and I couldn't tell for sure if the mark was under
"60 to 70" (I believe it was). Has anyone viewed Thomas Carrier in the 1840
census of Laurel County that can shed some light? If the 1850 census age for
Thomas is in error, and he was 10 years younger, then the 1773 marriage of
his possible parents would work with a 1774 birth year, which I've seen
elsewhere.
I'm not aware of a second wife for Thomas. As mentioned above, Nancy was
with him in the 1850 census of Laurel County. Her early death date in an
earlier message has me puzzled.
Enough rambling for now. Regards to all.

Hi Jan: I apologize for omitting the name of your Thomas' first wife in my
previous transmission. It was Nancy Hatcher d. 1816-23. Sorry for the
confusion. Ginny
Hi Jan: I have the following info on your line which I got from two
different sources. Dorene Carse at Carsed3(a)aol.com and from Helynn
Carrier's Study Paper. Helynn collects Carrier info. She doesn't
guarantee it. But this is what I have in my records on your Thomas:
They show Thomas' parents as John Carrier, Jr. and Mary Mooreal. Thomas is
shown as born in 1788 and purchased land in Sullivan Co., TN, 20 November
1809. He died May 1860 in Pulaski, KY. They had children William b. 1807,
Abigail b. 1809, John b. 1811, Stephen b. 1813. This info came from
Dorene. From Helynn Carrier, I got the following: He married second Susan
(?) who was born ca 1800 in TN. Their children were (1) Thomas b. ca 1808
TN, d. aft 1850, m. Malinda b. ca 1808 TN, children Nancy, Martha, Abigail,
Joanna; (2) John b. ca 1810-1812 TN, m. Mary b. ca 1814 TN, children John,
Nancy, Isaac; (3) Wm. M. b. ca 1814 TN, d. aft 1850, m. Sarah b. ca 1810
TN, children Calvin, John, Mary, Jonathan, Caroline, James; (4) DeLaney b.
ca 1816 TN, m. 1st Amm b. ca 1818 TN, d. 1850-60, m. 2nd 24 Jan. 1867
Amanda Jane Denton b. ca 1833, children John, Edmond, Elkaney, Eldridge;
(5) Edman b. ca 1823 TN, m. Catherine b. ca 1826 TN, children Elbert,
Lucinda, Mary.
I got this info a while ago, so it could have changed since. Hope it helps
in some way. Ginny

I descend from Jemima "Mima" Carrier b. abt 1782 who married John Hisey 4
April 1804 in Shenandoah Co., VA. Jemima was the daughter of Martha
Carrier who gave her consent to Jemima's marriage. I believe Martha was b.
abt 1764 and was the daughter of W. John Carrier who was b. ca 1705 in
England and d. November 1773 in Shenandoah Co., VA. Her mother was Jemima
Nicholas, who is believed to be W. John's second wife. His daughter,
Martha, was bound out to Jonathan Pugh when W. John died in 1773. I need
proof that this Martha is indeed the daughter of W. John Carrier and mother
of my Jemima. If so, Jemima was apparently born out of wedlock. Or, could
Martha be a widowed wife of another Carrier? There has also been written
that my Jemima sometimes went by her adopted name of White. I was unable
to confirm this, and the woman who had it in her DAR record was
unreachable. I have not been able to find any records of a White family
with a Jemima present. The time frame of events would seem right for this
Martha being the daughter of W. John. Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks. Ginny
It seems that most on this list are decendants of Thomas. My decendants actually go back to Jean Lebrun. It seems that we did not pick up the Carriere name until his son Noel Lebrun dit Carriere. I was wondering if anybody else has information on this line of carriers?

Hi all!
Since we seem to be reposting our interests (and stone walls!) here is
mine, which comes from the French side:
I'm interested in a Carrier (or Carriere) family that seems to have come
from Quebec, settled in or around Champlain, NY and then in Easthampton,
Mass.
Henry Carriere b. about 1849 (in NY, Quebec or even VT depending on what
source you believe) married Marie Gaudet in 1871 and died in
Easthampton, Mass. in 1927. She died in RI in 1853 almost 100 years old.
Alexander Carriere born 1880 in Champlain, NY, married Laura Duquette in
1899 in Champlain, NY. He died in NY about 1959, she died in South
Hadley, Mass. in 1958.
Ernest Carrier Sr. born 1903 in Champlain. Married Frances Mumblow in
NY and moved to Easthampton, Mass. He died in 1985 and she is still
living.
The stonewall if figuring out where Henry Carriere came from. Can't
find him in US Census records before 1920, although he must have been
living in Champlain, NY. His father may have also been Henri, but
nothing matches in birth records.

Hello List.
My Carrier line is:
1. Thomas Carrier md Martha Allen
2. Richard Carrier md Thankful Brown
3. Amos Carrier born July 3, 1722, in New York md Phebe Kneeland born abt
1729
4. Amariah Carrier born July 17, 1754, in New York md Honor Hogins
5. Robert Carrier born abt 1800 in New York and died 1884 in Clinton County,
Strawberry Point, Iowa md Calista Fenner born abt 1810 and died 1876 in
Strawberry Point, Iowa.
6. Chester Carrier born abt 1828 in New York md Mary Jane Hoyt born 1828 in
New York and died probably in Eustis or Fellsmere, Florida in the late
1930's.
7. Elbert Milton Carrier born 1864 in Clinton County, Iowa and died 1946 in
Lee County, Arkansas, md (2nd) Martha Elizabeth Wilhite born Mar 19, 1896 in
Montgomery County, Arkansas, and died Jan 1996, in Greene County, Arkansas.
HELP!
I am searching for
(1)the death date and place for Chester Carrier and Mary Jane Hoyt Carrier
(2) descendants of Chester Carrier's children-- Marion who died in Florida;
Julia Carrier Todd who died in Kansas City; and Calista (Kitty) Carrier
Heffelfinger who married U.S. Heffelfinger in Iowa. Their daughter
Clementine married Lawrence McAlester in Cass County, Iowa.
(3) the name of Elbert Milton Carrier's first wife--maybe Belle--and the
place for that marriage. Also, the name of the child born in this marriage.
Thanks, Neal. I enjoy reading all the posts to the Carrier list.
