Hi Roy,
Please excuse my interruption of your communication with Fred, but I
am
a descendant of a Carrico reportedly born in Preston County, WV. I
realize it was not that at the time in question, but that is the
information I found in a notebook my grandfather kept. In particular
is
says his grandfather, John Conley Carrico, was born in what is today
known as Rowlesburg, Preston County, West Virginia, August 8, 1779,
and
died in Greene County, Illinois, November 10, 1862. John Conley
Carrico
married Elizabeth Halbert, ca. 1798, probably in Athens County, Ohio.
Elizabeth Halbert was born in Maryland, October 25, 1778, and died
September 9, 1862. John C. Carrico is buried in Richwoods West
Cemetery
in Bluffdale Twp, Greene County, as is Elizabeth.
The beginning study in this family was initiated by a notebook which I
saw, and made copies of, that had been kept by my Grandfather, George
Leon White, which told a little of the earlier generations. The first
name in there that I looked for was John Conley Carrico and wife,
Elizabeth Halbert Carrico, the parents of Alexander Carrico, my
grandmother's (Laura Ann Carrico) father. John Conley Carrico was
reported to have been born ca. 1778, in Rowlesburg, West Virginia. In
the original document that George Leon DeBourney White wrote, the
place
of birth is given as Rodesburg, Virginia. I have no doubt that this
was
an error and the name of the town should have been Rowlesburg. We have
found several Carrico families living in the Rowlesburg area.
Another researcher wrote: 1779 would be early for any Carrico to
actually
be living in Rowlesburg, which was not called that in 1779. It was
the
farm of James Goff, who married Catherine Carrico. Rowlesburg got its
name from the B&O engineer, Rowles, who laid out the area when the
railroad came through from Cumberland, Md. That would have been after
1800.
So much for any documentation I would have. Can you comment on the
probabality of his parents?
Thanks,
John
