I found the following posts very interesting, as they are very similar to
the oral history regarding the origin of the Carrico name passed along to me
by my family. I will pass along my info following the excerpts from these

Carrico: Spanish or Italian?
Author: Mary Date: 12 Nov 2000 5:18 AM GMT
There seems to be much confusion as to the origins of the surname Carrico.
I've looked the name up on a couple of different search engines and found
Carrico to have origins coming from Spain and Italy. Can anyone confirm any
ancestors that come from either place?? Or know when or where the name might
have changed after migrating out from either country?? Any information would
be helpful!
Thanks - Mary

Mary,
Our family name of Carrico settled in Oregon City Or. in the i800's. The
story goes that two brothers came from the Isle of Corsia but they were
French, one brother settled in Virginia and our ancester came West to
Oregon.
(Editors note: I currently live in Oregon)

Hi, I'm descended from Ann Carrico Hebb, dau. of Peter IV. I understand they
came to Normandy, from Basque in Spain. Thay spoke French when they settled
in Md. I've also heard thay came from Northern Italy.

Passing along Carrico information

I have a book with a George W Carrico, born 1851 in Vermillion County,
Illinois. It does not state who his parents where but does state that his
paternal ancestry was of French descent, with members of the family coming
from France to Maryland to help Layfayette during the Revolution. It states
that after living near Harper's Ferry, one branch of the name went south and
the other went west.

Now, the Carrico story as told to me goes as follows:
The ethnicity of our Carrico name is French-Basque, (The Basque people
live in the mountainous area in between France and Spain,) and was
originally spelled DeCarrico.
Two brothers from that region sailed to America with Layfayette via
Portugal. They shortened the name to Carrico sometime after the voyage,
exactly when is not clear. After arriving, they had a heated argument over
something, and went thier separate
ways.
I have had the DeCarrico name confirmed to me by a local chinese resturant
owner whose wife comes from the Basque region, and says the name is very
common there. ( I went to the resturaunt to make a reservation, and when he
saw my last name - DeCarrico - He looked up and said you are Basque, aren't
you? ) My gr-uncle Ted Carrico is the first one to change it back (?) to
DeCarrico as far as I have been able to discover.
My father changed our family's name back (?) to DeCarrico from Carrico when
I was 6 years old and explained the oral history to me.
