A few years ago I spent some time concentrating on the Northern VA Carrico's. At the
time, I could not find anything linking for certain John W. Carrico b. 1827 to a parent. I
looked quickly at some of my notes......
I do agree that census records for William Carrico b. ca 1782 suggest he may have had an
unknown son born abt. the same time as John W. Carrico.
I do agree that John Carrico b. ca 1798 who removed to Licking Co., OH also may have had a
son born about the same time as John W. Carrico. But, I'll need to look further, but I
think all of the known descendants left VA with him. If John W. was his son, he would be
the only one who remained behind in VA.
Josiah Carrico b. ca 1798 did list at John W. Carrico then age 24 in his household in
1850. I have in my research over the years, seen several instances where whoever gave the
information to the census taker (be it the head of the house, other family member or even
a neighbor if the family was not at home...) where all children of the head of the house
are listed whether or not they still lived there.
I wouldn't write off Josiah Carrico as a possibility as yet w/o more research.
Some Carrico wills or estate records from the area might help to answer a lot of
questions.
Many Ohio county probate records are now available online via
familysearch.org. I'll
check Licking Co., to see what I can turn up.
As to how I think the Northern VA lines descend from the immigrant Peter Carrico of MD, We
know from published Trinity Parish records in Charles Co., MD that Peter's son Abel
had a son Abel b. 1743/1744.
Both Abel Carrico (b. 1743/44)& a William Carrico were taxed 1782 in Fairfax Co., VA.
This was too soon for Abel II's son William b. 1767 to have been a taxable.
1789 shows Abel & 2 William Carrico's taxed. One William w/b Abel's son, the
other?? His brother???
Even as early as 1770 I found both an Abel & William "Callico" in Fairfax

Somehow this was connected to George Washington & have found the name of Abel in
Washington's papers somewhere online (forgive my forgetfullness on this)
Ahh, here are my notes, not sure if the links are good anymore:

MOUNT VERNON GRISTMILL
Information supplied by the Mount Vernon Department of Archaeology
Historic Background
The following looks to be in 1770
The stonemasons that worked on the mill were Joseph Goart and John Hull. The millwright
Ball had five men employed on the construction of the mill: Thomas Ball (his brother),
Richard Talbott, John Grinstead, Reason Porter and Edward Todd. Other hands hired to help
construct the mill or dig the race included Thomas Byrd, John Harvey, Coxe Rice, Thomas
Emmison, William Crook, and Abel Callico and his son. The latter five did not work long
enough to be listed in Washington's account ledger (Jackson and Twohig 1976 2:232,
233, 234, 243, 244).

Abel Callico had worked for Lund Washington on Fitzhugh's mill in 1764, but
neither he nor his son proved to be of much help in digging GW's mill- race, as they
failed to merit any pay (Lund Washington's account book, ..........
I also have something else I need to dig out. More later
