Hi List,
I have for several years had an interest in finding the parents of John Conley Carrico.
It has been quite a while since I submitted a query, so would like to ask if anyone has
run into the subject individual?
According to my grandfather, George Leon White, my great great grandfather, John Conley
Carrico, was born in what is today known as Rowlesburg, Preston County, West Virginia,
August 8, 1779, and died in Greene County, Illinois, November 10, 1862. There is some
doubt as to the location of his birth. Various census records indicate John Conley
Carrico was born in Maryland. John Conley Carrico married Elizabeth Halbert, ca. 1798,
possibly in Athens County, Ohio, but more likely in Maryland. Elizabeth Halbert was born
in Maryland, October 25, 1778, and died September 9, 1862. John Conley Carrico is buried
in Richwoods West Cemetery in Bluffdale Twp, Greene County, Illinois, as is Elizabeth.
The beginning study in this family was initiated by a notebook which I saw, and made
copies of, that had been kept by my Grandfather, George Leon White, which told a little of
the earlier generations. The first name in there that I looked for was John Conley
Carrico and wife, Elizabeth Halbert Carrico, the parents of Alexander Carrico, my
grandmother's (Laura Ann Carrico) father. John Conley Carrico was reported to have
been born ca. 1778, in Rowlesburg, West Virginia. In the original document that George
Leon White wrote, the place of birth is given as Rodesburg, Virginia. I have no doubt
that this was an error and the name of the town should have been Rowlesburg. We have found
several Carrico families living in the Rowlesburg area.
There were two men by the name of John C. Carrico living in Illinois in the 1850's,
John Clark Carrico and John Conley Carrico. I have found John Conley Carrico in the
census, identified by a comparison of the wife and children. I have found John Clark
Carrico in the county history records and the 1850 Jersey County census report. Whenever
these people are found, they are listed as John C. Carrico, or simply John Carrico. An
evaluation of the family members found in association with them is generally the way they
are identified.
George Leon White said that John Conley Carrico was born in Virginia, and the record of
Samuel Truitt Carrico shows John Conley Carrico as being born in Virginia, but I find that
the 1840 and 1880 census indicates that he was born in Maryland. That makes two records
which indicate he was born in Virginia, and two which says he was born in Maryland.
Thanks,
