The DNA evidence tells us not only that we "connect," but that we connect
"in genealogical time," that is, within 10-15 generations. That connection is
solid whether you have paper to support it, or not. If you have this haplotype:
http://dgmweb.net/DNA/Carrico/CarricoDNA-results-HgJ2a4b.html
you are either descended from Peter CARRICO, 1674 immigrant to Maryland, or someone very
closely related to him (e.g., a brother, uncle, or close cousin). So far, Peter appears
to have been the only CARRICO immigrant to the U.S. prior to the 20th Century, so the
probablity is high that he's your ancestor.
When the DNA and the paper don't agree, as with the paper descendants of Reason
CARRICO, we say the DNA is correct and the paper is wrong:

Reason CARRICO must be an adopted son of Charles CARRICO, not his biological son, because
descendants of the other sons of Charles do match Peter, the immigrant. In other words,
it's possible for the DNA to prove the paper wrong, but it's simply not possible
for the paper to prove the DNA wrong. DNA always trumps paper.
That doesn't mean we stop searching for the paper connections - far from it - but it
does suggest that the first step in doing one's genealogy ought to be DNA testing. I
implore all men, not just all male CARRICOs to by Y-DNA tested, if not for yourself, they
for family genealogists, now and in the future.
