Pete & Jenny -
Other software companies do NOT require you to agree to let them use your
research - Family Tree is the only one that sells CDs of people's research.
If you aren't sure what to use, I suggest you start with PAF because it's
free and because it has very strong user support. If you decide later to
that you like another program better, you haven't lost the work you've
done - all programs can import and export a "gedcom" file, which is used to
transfer your data from one program to another.
I have some very strong opinions on software and features, but since this
mailing list is not a software forum, I'll stop here.

Dear Pete,
Maybe your lucky day!
I just finished a Genealogy beginners class, though I have been doing this
for about 16 years.
The class was to help me meet new friends as we have just recently moved
to
the area, and second to learn of local resources for search. The one
I was
most interested in was the LDS or Mormon Church local records and
resources
which are you probably know are vast.
When we went to the Local LDS they told us that they have their own
software
for keeping track of your family tree, which you can later submit to
the
LDS
to add to there huge collection / or not its up to you ! They do not
use
the
material you submit for profit. The Family Tree Maker Verzion 11 that
I
own
does require you to agree to what ever use they may find for you hard
work
and research if you submit to them, so i can only assume that other
software
may do the same thing ask that you agree to how ever they see fit to
use
your material.
So on that note here is the link to the PAF 5.2 the newest updated
version
to use and download, if you like, I have been using it for several
weeks
now
and it works similar to other programs I have bought for over $89
each.
Plus
the bonus thing you get to use their research files to see what they
have
along the line your searching. Some of it I have used to verify what I
already had found! WORKS GREAT!
note: I am not associated with the Mormon Church or the LDS in any way!
Just passing on some useful information!
Happy Hunting! Jenny
