Pete:
One other important data point I forgot to mention - I just noticed as I was
browsing through one of my stacks of genealogy stuff.
We found PDF documents from the Republic of Texas in 1836 and 1837 saying
that Matthew G. Carrico was born in Spencer County, Kentucky - about 1809 or
1810. Someone else (Linda Boorom) told me that the families of Thomas
Ignatius and Basil Carrico lived in Spencer County in that timeframe. Is
there any evidence that Matthew G. Carrico came from one of those families?

Fred Carrico

Pete Carrico:
Thanks for the note. I'm curious about the details of the Carrico family
that you've traced back to Portugal; I've heard theories about Italy and
Portugal - but no details or facts. Also what is the lineage of your
Carrico line coming forward to you?
FYI, this is what I know -- and don't know about my line of the Carrico
family:
I KNOW
I did a lot of research a few years ago, and I have a pretty clear history
of our Carrico family dating back to the 1830 census for Goliad, TX. That
is the first date we have found records of my g-g-grandfather, Matthew G.
(Gillaspy?) Carrico (different spellings we have found are "Mathew" and
"Carico".) The Texas census records we have found show him being from
Kentucky - and being born about 1810. Following is my line from Matthew G.
Carrico (born about 1807-10 in Kentucky, died 1863 or later in Panola
County, TX, married Rachel. S. Wilkerson) -> William David Carrico (born
about 1851, died 1935 in Terrell, TX, married Mary Charlotte Gary) -> Winant
Gillaspy Carrico (born 1/27/1867 in Texas, died 12/2/1901, married Nolen
Etna Vaughn in Panola County, TX) -> Johnie Eugene Carrico (born 9/1/1899 in
St. Augustine, TX, died 11/18/1947 in Houston, TX, married Leta Elouise
Pickle) -> Fred Allen Carrico (born 11/13/1943 in Houston, TX).
As indicated, I was born and raised in Houston, TX - and stayed there
through my college years (University of Houston) and the early years of my
career with Arthur Young & Company (CPA firm). I later moved to New
Orleans, New York City (lived in Connecticut), Ft. Worth, TX, and Bloomfield
Hills, MI - and finally to Colorado Springs (when I retired in 1997). I was
a partner with Arthur Young and later the CFO of Bell Helicopter Textron. I
was married twice - now 25 years to my wife, Kathleen Ubelhart Carrico. We
have four children (two from my first marriage) and three grandchildren.
DON'T KNOW (can only guess, so far)
We have not been able to determine our ancestors before Matthew G. Carrico.
We have an unproven theory that his father may be Matthew W. Carrico
(Washington and Marion Counties, Kentucky, 1791-1842). It is far from an
"air-tight" theory, but it is based on the possibility of an undocumented
son being born to Matthew W. when he would have been about 19 years old.
The theory is based on two key items: (1) the timing could be right, and (2)
the names "Matthew" and "Carrico" are both rare in that timeframe -
and it
is possible that Matthew W. may have named his firstborn "Matthew". (So
far, we have not been able to find any other credible theories as to Matthew
G.'s father.) If Matthew W. is Matthew G.'s father, I believe the line
backwards would be Matthew W. Carrico -> James Carrico, Jr. -> James (or
John) Carrico -> Peter Carrico. That would get back to the "original
Carricos", as I understand it, in Charles County, Maryland. (I don't know
if I've got this historical lineage correct; I've spent most of my research
trying to find out if Matthew W. or some other Carrico is the father of
Matthew G. Carrico - unfortunately, so far, without success.)
I look forward to hearing from you. Any ideas you may have to solve the
mystery of my g-g-grandfather's parents would be greatly appreciated.
Regards,
Fred Carrico

Fred,
I'm a Carrico living in Maryland, where we've traced
our ancestors back to 1561 in Portugal. My youngest
brother even went to Portugal and had met some of the
present day Carrico's in Figuera Da Foz.
The following may give you some leads, as you will see
the decendents of Peter Carrico b.1700.
You may be interested in THOMAS IGNATIUS CARRICO,
BAZZIL/BASIL CARRICO or BARTHOLOMEW CARRICO in the
following line:

Charles County, Maryland. He married (2) MARGARET
O'BRYAN/O'BRIEN GATES?? 1738 in Trinity Parish,
Charles County, Maryland. She was born Bef. 1715 in
Charles County, Maryland (Bryantown Hundred) (could be
Adam O'Bryan's sister!!), and died 1767 in Bryantown
Hundred, Charles County, Maryland.
Child of PETER CARRICO and ANN GATES is:
i. PETER3 CARRICO III, b. 1722, Bryantown Hundred,
Maryland; d. Aft. 1790, Montgomery County, Maryland.
