Diana:
The bird is often noted as the sedge wren. It is mostly found today in Portugal in the
marshy coastal area. The region around Matos dos Carriço is marshy, being at the mouth
of the Mondego. I found a bakery there with T-shirts sporting the bird. After being
convinced I was not from the tax bureau, they decided I was OK and gave me a dozen to
bring home. The wren aids the grape growers by eating a particularly troublesome larva and
is much admired. Of all of the modern translations of carrico and carrica I have never
heard the one Pete mentioned, a bottle cap. Because of its origin, a cane-like marsh plant
with tassel, the definition, fuzzy haired person, sometimes can be found. Mostly, the word
itself has faded into history as a term in the everyday language and I found few who had
any idea what it meant, other than a small, and for most, rare bird. Maybe Pete had a lot
of bushy hair at the time of his visit!

Subject: [CARRICO] Carriça
I just found a Portuguese word, "Carriça," the common name of Troglodytes
troglodytes, the bird we know in the U.S. as the Winter Wren, but is known
simply as "Wren" in Europe (in English). With the cedilla on the c, I presume
it would be pronounced, ka-REES-sa.

The bird is wide-ranging in habitat, including suburbs and gardens, and occurs
as a common resident in Portugal.
