Helen,
I believe Diana is looking at the evidence that was presented, that being
the differing spellings of James Carrico Goff's middle name, and perhaps
other spellings of which she is aware. The question at hand was not the
origin of the Carrico name, but rather Peter Carrico himself. If he used the
"Careeso" pronunciation, it would seem that (mainly) English clerks over
time would offered spellings that reflect this verbalization. Only a careful
study of the various spellings over time can offer a clue as to how the name
was pronounced in America. In other words, from what I read Carrico is
demonstrably a Portugese name, but Diana also has examples from Italy. From
my perspective, I would like to know where Peter Carrico came from rather
than the etymology of the name itself. Thanks,
Phil Goff

Why on earth would the pronounciation of Careeso argue against being
Portuguese??? I cannot believe what I am reading....
