Hi cousins,
I rec'd a message from rootsweb this morning that they are discontinuing the mailing
lists effective
Mar 2. See copied message below. Meanwhile, I did set up a "Carrico Ancestry"
page at Face Book a
few years ago. All are welcome to join us there.

Beginning March 2nd, 2020 the Mailing Lists functionality on RootsWeb will be
discontinued. Users
will no longer be able to send outgoing emails or accept incoming emails. Additionally,
administration tools will no longer be available to list administrators and mailing lists
will be
put into an archival state.
Administrators may save the emails in their list prior to March 2nd. After that, mailing
list
archives will remain available and searchable on RootsWeb.
As an alternative to RootsWeb Mailing Lists, Ancestry message boards are a great option to
network
with others in the genealogy community. Message boards are available for free with an
Ancestry
registered account.
Thank you for being part of the RootsWeb family and contributing to this community.
Sincerely,
The RootsWeb team

What a bummer! I've seen this happen to another Yahoo list that has been around since
the beginning of Yahoo. Anyone have a clue as to why these sites are doing this??

Tim, just my thoughts:
over the past few years there have been several instances where the lists have been shut
down (and
other area's of rootsweb) for extended periods of time. Started with the cyber attack
on ancestry,
then the hole or something at rootsweb with passwords. I went for a long time w/o access
to my
USGenWeb site (and USGenWeb was getting upset with those of us waiting it out with
rootsweb) and
even my freepages space there. I have those back. The lists were/are another issue. I
think people
moved away from them, and, the search functions stink now. Perhaps the same problem that
Ann
Gillespie Mitchell (ancestry/rootsweb) states has been a problem with the World Connect
sites " The
old display code and the back-end systems were not capable of being updated to support our
security
requirements."
I think a lot of people have set up private groups at FB. I am in a few surname projects
and a great
many other groups involving ancestry and/or DNA
Linda
