John:
Good to hear from you. If we have proof of John C. Carrico being born in what is now
Rowlesburg, WV, it would be the earliest by far that any document shows a Carrico in this
vicinity. The records at the Aurora Lutheran Church place a baptism of Peter and Catherine
Carrico's daughter, Elizabeth, in the 1790s. As of the 1780 Census, Peter Carrico was
in Montgomery County, MD. I'd love to have an earlier document to place the Carricos
here in Rowlesburg prior to the baptism. One historic note. Rowlesburg is celebrating 150
years today, February 27, 2008--chartered by the Commonwealth of Virginia in 1858 on this
date. The name before that was Vicksburg, or in some spellings, Viksburg. James Rowles, a
B&O civil engineer is the namesake. Let me know more about the records you have.
Best,

Subject: [CARRICO] John Conley Carrico
Good Evening, List. Just a quick note to ask if anyone has any
documentation/information regarding John Conley Carrico? My great great grandfather,
John Conley Carrico, was born in what is today known as Rowlesburg, Preston County, West
Virginia, August 8, 1779, and died in Greene County, Illinois, November 10, 1862. John
Conley Carrico married Elizabeth Halbert, ca. 1798, probably in Athens County, Ohio.
Elizabeth Halbert was born in Maryland, October 25, 1778, and died September 9, 1862 .
John C. Carrico is buried in Richwoods West Cemetery in Bluffdale Twp, Greene County, as
is Elizabeth. The beginning study in this family was initiated by a notebook which I
saw, and made copies of, that had been kept by my Grandfather, George Leon White, which
told a little of the earlier generations. The first name in there that I looked for
was John Conley Carrico and wife, Elizabeth Halbert Carrico, the parents of Alexander
Carrico, my grandmothe!
r's (Laura Ann Carrico) father. John Conley Carrico was reported to have been born
ca. 1778, in Rowlesburg, West Virginia. In the original document that George Leon
DeBourney White wrote, the place of birth is given as Rodesburg, Virginia. I have no
doubt that this was an error and the name of the town should have been Rowlesburg. We
have found several Carrico families living in the Rowlesburg area. John Sissom
