Diana & all,
I'd like to try to put something on my website, so that others can visualize what the
various shapes
of the tracts, i.e. Maidstone, Carricos Hope etc. and how they connected to each other.
However,
this is not as easy as it would seem. Most tracts just don't fit like pieces of a
puzzle like I
would have expected.
I've purchased a program called "DeedMapper" that Phil Goff recommended. In
the past I've relied on
the survey's etc.. found of different patents, which unfortunately the Maryland State
Archives
claims copyright on all of the images they have online, so I've been limited to
transcriptions of
the documents as I've found time. But the transcriptions don't help to show others
the "shape" of
the tract and visualize how they might adjoin.
But, even with the program, not all of the tracts match up. Even Maidstone, inputting from
the
original patent to John Hunt in 1675 for 100 acres does not match "exactly" with
Peter Carrico's
survey of the original patent with his resurvey in 1734. Guess that's why his patent
in 1734 was
disallowed. It appears that what he included as vacant land in that resurvey of Maidstone,
probably
ended as Carricos Hope, which still didn't agree precisely with Arthur Smoots
rendition of Carricos
Hope when he had it resurveyed into Smoots Advantage.
Guess it's the equipment of the time, but I still figured a more recent survey (1966)
of lands that
included Maidstone would match better, but even though the shape of the 1966 survey
appears the
same, it doesn't "match" with a current day tax map..........
Not sure how to present to everyone, although I think I've found at least the
approximate area on
today's map where it was in the 1700's..........
Will keep working on this and pondering.........
Linda
