Michael -
I have the 1880 census on CD (from
familysearch.org) and searched it for Bedsaul. The
program came up with these spelling variations:
Bedsaul
Bedsale
Bedsole
Betsel
Betsell
Betsill
Betsol
Betzel
Betzell
In whatever program you're using, try inserting some wildcard characters, like
B*ts*l*, B*ds*l*, B*tz*l*, B*dz*l*. That gives you 4 variations to search on, instead
of 9 or more. In my experience, if you simplify it to B*l* you'll get WAY too many
worthless matches.
Walter James (& variations) should have been around 5 years old in 1880, but I
didn't find anyone who even came close.
Try looking at birth records in Carroll Co, Va from the 1920s to about 1960 for the
children of Walter James' sons. William O should have his own household in 1930 -
have you looked for him?
Whatever index you're using for the censuses, try a different one. Most of them have
indexes in books, on CD, and several indexes on line, all made by different groups. I
solved one puzzle with an index of just one county in Illinois made by a local genealogy
society - a skinny little book that we just happened to have in California. A friend of
mine couldn't find a specific family in 1880, so she used my CDs, still couldn't
find them and so tried searching on just the first name and age of one of the daughters
who had an unusual name - and found them listed with no last name! The indexer had given
up trying to decipher the last name and had left it blank, so my friend was never going to
find them in that index by searching on the last name, no matter how many variations she
tried. When we found a copy of the original hand-written record, we could see why - the
census taker had the kind of handwriting where the letters eimnruv & w all look like
so many waves on the ocean! ٨٨٨٨٨٨٨٨ My friend recognized the name - but she was used
to looking for it. I could see why the census taker couldn't figure it out.
Also note: one of Eritt/Ert/Eart/Eara's children is listed as "Mary Polly
(Polly)". Polly was a common nickname for Mary, so if they named her Mary Polly,
that would be like naming a son William Bill. I think it's more likely that her name
was Mary and her nickname was Polly.
Happy hunting

Subject: [CARRICO] Carrico to Bedsaul
Diane & Linda,
(and anyone else who might have info)
I am looking for a possible Carrico male, who may have had a surname change
to Bedsaul. The following was provided to the Bedsaul Message Board:
"Hi. I searched under Bedsaul and this is the first time, ever, that
something has come up as the name actually existing. I am very interested in
its origin, as nobody seems to remember where it came from other than, "They
were Cherokee Indian." Bedsaul is my maternal grandmother's maiden name and
her father's first name was Eart or Erit. They are from Galax, VA. Does
anyone have any knowledge of their history?? Also, ledgend has it that my
great grandfather traded his last name (Carrico to Bedsaul) with another man
for "an overcoat." ... must have been pretty cold, and someone must have
been in trouble...
Yes!! That's my great grandfather. He and Myrtle had 5 children: Norma Rae,
Wilma Sue (Sue, My Grandmother), Imogene (Jean), Wayne (called Butch), and
Mary Polly (Polly). Myrtle was Irish, Chinese, and Cherokee. Her mother's
name was Sue Hayzee (whom my grandmother was named after, and my middle name
is Sue as well.) I have a lot of history on the Aldred side if you're
interested. By chance, would you happen to know more about the Bedauls. I
was always told they were Cherokee, and he definately looked it. However,
everytime I search Bedsaul, I get nothing. Any info you have would be
cherished!! Thank you so much for that!!"
