Out of curiousity, do the documents state that Pero Dias Carrico was accused of
Judiasm or of Heresy (perhaps
meaning something else)..??
There is also an interesting tale that the Carrico's were French Huguenots. I
do not think this is the case. Would love to know more.

Subject: Re: [CARRICO] Passing along Carrico information
Thank you for the links, Katie.
I'm generalizing.... but it appears, at least to me, that the Maryland CARRICOs
who descend from Peter I, the immigrant, were Catholic, and that those who
descend from Peter II and migrated to Kentucky (and westwards) were also
Catholic. Those who descend from son Abel, who migrated from Maryland to
Virginia, are said to have been Protestant, at least in later generations. So
far, I know of no American CARRICOs descended from Peter I who are Jewish,
however...
The American descendants of Peter I are Haplogroup J2a4b, and Haplogroup J2 is
common among Sephardic and Ashkenazi Jews (15-30%):

Their haplogroup is not proof Peter's ancestors were Jewish, but it's not
inconsistent with them having been Jewish.
I believe DNA testing will someday give us an answer, at least to the question
of *where* Peter I came from. We just have to keep finding and testing more
European CARRICOs.

The best source I know to show for Carrico orgins is here:
http://dgmweb.net/DNA/Carrico/CarricoDNA.html
One of the questions the study hopes to answer is:
"3) Was Peter CARRICO, many of whose descendants are Roman Catholic, related
to
the converso, Pero Dias CARRICO, who was imprisoned by the Spanish
Inquisition
in
Portugal in 1629-33 for the crime of "Judaismo"
and forced to convert to Catholicism to gain his release?"
Someday maybe a match will be found that will answer the question of Carrico
origin.
If it can be proven that Peter is the son of Pedro Dias Carrico then
it would
be very
like to assume that the Carricos at that point were Jewish. There is
a lot of
interesting information to be gleaned from Diana's research and data. Hope
this
helps to answer the questions of Carrico origins.
