I don't recall this information being posted to the List before, so here
goes:
"Early Charles County Maryland Settlers 1658-1745" by Marlene Strawser
Bates & F. Edward Wright, 1995, Family Line Publications
page 48:
"CARRICO, Abel and his wife Elizabeth. Deed dated 11 Nov 1736, from
Marmaduke Simms and his wife Mary, part of a tract called St. Georges, 93
acres. (Land: 0#2.177. Also see Land: 0#2.375 recorded 4 Dec 1738.)
CARICO, Mary Ann, dau. of Abel and Elisabeth Carrico, born 4 July 1737.
(Trinity: 107--rev.)
CARRICOE, James (planter). Lease on 9 March 1742, of 104 acres, for
lifetimes of sd. James Carrico, Catherine Carricoe his wife, and Sarah
Carricoe, his dau. (Land: 0#2.435)
CARICO, Abel, son of Abel and Elisabeth Carico, born 21 Jan 1744.
(Trinity: 107--rev.)"
My observations:
James Carrico Goff (1762-1837), oldest son of John Turton & Monica
(Carrico) Goff, was apparently the namesake of a James Carrico, possibly
the one above. Monica (Carrico) Goff was apparently born sometime around
1740 and could possibly be a daughter of James & Catherine Carrico above.
Monica was too old to have been a daughter of John & Monica (Hagan?)
Carrico as John was born about 1739. John Carrico and Monica (Carrico)
Goff would have been first cousins instead if she was the daughter of
James Carrico above. This James was apparently the brother of Peter
Carrico (c1689-1765) and therefore born about 1693.
The will of Peter Carrico (c1689-1765) only names his sons but did he
have daughters who were not named in his will? It seems strange that
there were no daughters in this family. If Monica (Carrico) Goff was the
daughter of this Peter, her oldest son would therefore have been named
after her brother, James Carrico.
James Goff, brother of John Turton Goff, married a Catharine Carrico for
his second wife. Catharine was about 20-25 years younger than Monica and
may not have been her sister as family historians believe. Morton's 1914
History of Preston Co WV names the brothers of Catharine (Carrico) Goff
but makes no mention of her having a sister, Monica. This could have
been an oversight, however.
Catharine (Carrico) Goff may have been the daughter of Peter Carrico Jr.
Peter Jr (b c1722) was certainly old enough to have had a grandson (James
Carrico Goff) born in 1762, making Monica and Catharine sisters as
historians believe. The James Carrico name combination has been carried
down in the family of John Turton & Monica (Carrico) Goff and this
indicates the name James Carrico had some significance. James Carrico
Goff may have been named for his great uncle rather than a more immediate
family member, however.
Could Peter Carrico Jr (b c1722) have been the son of James Carrico (b
c1693) rather than Peter Carrico (b c1689)? This would make Catharine
(Carrico) Goff a niece of Monica (Carrico) Goff if James (b c1693) was
Monica's father. Peter Jr is not named in the will of Peter Carrico (b
c1689). Jr and Sr in the early records didn't always mean father and
son. Sometimes Jr was used when the II would have been the proper
designation.
Any comments?
