To the list:
An error by Homer Edwin Carrico in the Filson Club History Quarterly
(July 1951) has lead Carrico researchers astray for years.
On page 220 of The Carrico Family, Homer erred in listing Albert Coleman
Carrico (1792-1869) as the spouse of Sibbeth Holbert. Albert Coleman
Carrico was the son, rather than the father, and he was born in 1838.
The father of Albert Coleman Carrico and spouse of Sibbeth Holbert was
JOSEPH Carrico born Apr 9 1792 and died Mar 2 1869. In the 1850 census
of Preston Co WV (then VA), household #266-266, is JOSEPH Carrico age 58
[b 1792] b Va farmer, Sebath age 59 b Va, Caleb age 19 b Va laborer,
James age 17 b Va laborer & ALBERT age 13 b Va.
Morton states on page 331 of his 1914 History of Preston County West
Virginia that Joseph [1792-1868] was the only son of Peter Carrico and
that Joseph had six sons. (Homer names eight sons but two of these died
in infancy and he lists their father as Albert Coleman rather than
Joseph.) Morton further states on page 331 that Peter Carrico (father of
Joseph) had these siblings: Francis, Catherine, a brother who settled in
Culpeper Co VA, a brother who settled in Charles Co MD, a brother who
settled in Kentucky and another brother. (There may have been others not
remembered.) Monica Carrico should belong in this family also if she is
the sister of Catherine. Monica and Catherine married Goff brothers,
John Turton & James, respectively.
Peter Carrico (father of Joseph) apparently died in 1815 before the
formation of Preston Co in 1818 as this is the last year he appears on
the personal property tax lists for Monongalia Co, the parent county of
Preston. In 1816 Catherine Carrico (presumably the widow of Peter)
appears on the Monongalia County personal property tax list. If Morton
is correct in stating Joseph was the only son of Peter, the remainder of
his children were daughters. There is record of only two of Peter &
Catherine's daughters. These were: Malinda/Virlinda born 1777 and Ann
Eliza born 1798. There is a big gap between 1777 and 1798 with Joseph
(the only son) born 1792. Unfortunately, Peter left no will or probate
record naming his heirs. Also, Monongalia Co records prior 1796 were
destroyed in a courthouse fire.
Peter Carrico was probably born in the 1750's or earlier. He is listed as
over 45 in the 1810 census of Monongalia Co. Also listed in his
household is a female 26-45 who is presumably his wife, Catherine, but if
her age group is reported correctly she would have been too young to have
been the mother of Malinda/Virlinda born 1777. (Morton lists
Malinda/Virlinda as the daughter of Francis while her death record gives
her parents as Peter & Catherine.) Also in Peter's household in 1810
were: 1 male 16-26 (b 1784-94), 1 male 10-16 (b 1784-1800) and 2 females
under 10 (b 1800-10). The identity of the two males is a mystery. They
could be farm laborers or nephews (possibly sons of Francis). Francis
Carrico does not appear in 1810 census of Monongalia Co but his son James
was married in Monongalia Co in 1813. The name Carrico appears in the
personal property tax lists of Monongalia Co 1797-1817 but not in the
land tax lists 1788-1817 or in Monongalia Co deed records. They were
apparently not landowners.
The father of Peter, Francis, Catherine, etc appears to have been Peter
Carrico Jr born about 1722. Does anyone have any documentation that
Peter Jr's wife was Elizabeth Coleman? Joseph Carrico born about 1744
was probably a son as he appears to have lived in Preston Co for awhile.
Alexander Carrico born about 1750 and died about 1840 in Indiana lived
for awhile in Kentucky. He may be the sibling of Peter, Francis and
Catherine who settled in Kentucky. None of the sons of Peter & Margaret
Carrico appear to have been old enough to have been the father of the
above siblings.
It would be logical to assume Peter Jr was the son of Peter Carrico who
died in Charles Co MD in 1765; however, Peter's will doesn't name a son
Peter. He could have been a nephew instead as Jr and Sr don't always
mean father and son. Sometimes Jr was used when the II would have been
the proper designation. Does anyone know the identity of Peter Carricoe
who appears on the 1733 tax list for Charles Co MD in Newport West Side
Upper Part? Peter Carrico Jr would have only been 11 in 1733.
The Carrico family is confusing to say the least but these are my
observations in regard to my direct Carrico line. If there's something
I'm not seeing here or if anyone has any comments on the above, please
let me know your thoughts.
