I agree with you that the ages in the census, particularly of Alfred, appear incorrect.
Having ages be "off" from census to census, sometimes widely, is not unusual.
Keep in mind that we don't know who was the informant here. It might have been one of
the children or even a neighbor. It is really worth reading up about the problems with
census records. While they're probably a genealogists single best tool, they are
without their problems.
I agree that Amanda's maiden name was not RICHARDSON. According to a Public Member
Tree at
Ancestry.com, her maiden name was HINES. I am in the process of adding that
information to their page, right now. Because if the uncertainty of Amanda's
birthname, I've changed the URL to:

Amanda did marry Alfred as Amanda RICHARDSON, which would suggest she possibly married a
Mr. RICHARDSON before she married Alfred. A prior marriage would explain the children
born before she and Alfred married -- at least, it would explain Frank and Nora, though
not Sarah. Amanda HINES shows up unmarried and living with her parents in the 1870
census, and Sarah was born ca. 1868.
I don't have any final answers for you, I'm just gathering what data I can find.
