Having just discovered a major breakthru I thought I would give this a shot.
I discovered my grandmother had a younger sister who is still alive!!
My grandmother's death certificate indicates her mother was Mary Carrico and
father was Stephen Wilcox. My grandaunt informs me that Mary's father was
Andrew Winton Carrico. My grandmother was born in 1891. I have no idea
when Stephen and Mary married or where they were married. Stephen died in a
Methodist retirement home for retired Methodist ministers late 1950s or
early 1960s. Mary died before him but I have no idea when.
I do not know when Stephen and Mary got married. I have been told that he
was a farmer in Friese, VA. My grandaunt tells me they left VA in abt 1904
to move to IL where Stephen became a Methodist minister.
Wondering if anyone has these two Carrico's in their database.

I am trying to trace the lineage of the Carrico family in the District of
Columbia. Mac Hathway suggested that you may be able to assist. There are
numerous Carrico's buried at Congressional Cemetery and Mt. Olivet Cemetery in
Washington D. C.
We have traced my family back to William B. Carrico, born about 1782 in
Maryland. It would seem that we should be able to link him with one of the
grandchildren to the original Peter Carrico but have had no luck.
We have also found others:
Thomas Carrico residing near Bryantown, MD, in 1839, sends two sons to
Georgetown College.
James Carrico marries Mary Owens in DC in 1816.
James R Carrico marries Susan Marilor in DC in 1830.
John Carrico marries Jane O'Brien in DC in 1815.
Peter B. Carrico marries Mary Johnson in DC in 1813
Peter G. Carrico b. DC 1819, marries Elizabeth Bradley in DC in 1844
William Carrico marries Sophrenia Dorvel in DC in 1836
William H Carrico b. DC abt 1828, marries Rosilla Mohune, 1856, and Margaret
Masters, 1863, both in DC.
We have no information connecting any of these Carricos to their ancesters.
Does anyone have any history on these individuals, or any and other Carrico
family history for DC or SE MD for the late 1700's or early 1800's?
We would appreciate any assistance.

Would like to hear from some of Vincent Carrico's descendants (Vincent son
of James & Elizabeth Clement), need some informaton so that I can get his
records straight. I am a descendant of his sister Elizabeth 'Tobitha"
CARRICO WITHINGTON.
I believe he is the Vincent CARRICO b. Sep 1794 Charles Co., MD d. 26 Mar
1816, St. Louis/St. Louis Co., MO.
I have him married twice, 1st 5 Jul 1791 Franklin Co., VA to Frances Estes
and 2nd 18 Feb 1796, Madison Co., KY to Susannah Quick (with a remaking of
vows to Susannah Quick 28 Nov 1811 St. Ferdinands Ch. MO).
Is this correct?
I need to have his children straightened out/or just to make sure I have
the correct children in the correct order for him. Can someone help with
that Please.?
Other question is that I have always been told that he & Thomas
Withington, his brother in law, were traveling together, what was he doing
in Franklin Co., VA? And was Thomas Withington there also?

I believe the publication to which you refer is "The Carrico Family" by Homer Edwin Carrico (1951, Filson Club Historical Quarterly, vol. XXV, pp. 217-252). It was reprinted in 1981 as pp. 215-250 in "Genealogies of Kentucky Families" by Genealogical Publ. Co., Baltimore. It was republished in 1997 as "Family History: Kentucky Genealogies #1, 1700s-1800s," CD-185, by Broderbund. If you belong to the Filson Club, they will send you a photocopy. Otherwise, unless your local library has a copy, the cheapest, fastest way to get a copy is to buy the Broderbund CD.
I have been working off and on for several months on turning Homer's paper into a Family Tree Maker File. I have all the individuals entered (that was the easy part), and now I'm working on adding the source text to each datum (that is the hard part). I have not finished, but nearly so. I would be happy to email this file to anyone, even in its current state, keeping in mind that I haven't finished sourcing it. I don't think I can face proof-reading it, so what I would request in return is that anyone finding errors please inform me, so I can fix them.
Homer's paper is still under copyright, but I submit that I have changed the work sufficiently (value added) that the .FTW file now constitutes a new publication (under the concept of "compilation" copyright). As such, I own an implicit copyright to the .FTW file. I give anyone permission to use this file and to share it with other Carrico researchers provided they do not charge for it, post it where a fee is charged for access, or include it in a larger work or file that is for sale. In return, it behooves anyone who uses this file to either buy the Broderbund CD or join the Filson Club (or send them a donation). Anyone doing genealogy in Kentucky should do themselves a favor and join the Filson Club! And the Broderbund CD is a useful addition to the library of almost anyone doing genealogy in Kentucky. If we subvert the intention of the copyright law by pirating the work of others, the incentive to produce and publish will dry up. The profit motive is responsible for !
!
!
the vast majority of published works now at our disposal. Let's not kill the goose...
<stepping down off soapbox>
And now, under the concept of "fair use," here are the lines from Homer Carrico's article pertaining to Cornelius, Edward, and James (pagination is as in the 1981 GPC reprint, not the Filson Club original):
p. 234 -
"(3-7) Cornelius Carrico was born 1772 in Charles County, Maryland.122 He married first, Susanna Shanks in Nelson County, Kentucky, January 27, 1806;123 and second, Theresa O'Bryan, in Washington County, Kentucky, May 24, 1823.124 (No record has been found of issue, if any, of this second marriage.)
"The child of Cornelius and Susanna (Shanks) Carrico was:
"(4-1) Edward Carrico (1810- ), who married Matilda Dillehay (1811- ), daughter of John C. Dillehay, February 23, 1825.125 The children of Edward and Matilda (Dillehay) Carrico were:126
"(5-1) Thomas H. Carrico (1837- ).
"(5-2) Susan M. Carrico (138- ).
"(5-3) Lucetta J. Carrico (1839- ).
"(5-4) James M. Carrico (1843- ).
"(5-5) Robert J. Carrico (1848- )."
Footnotes on page 247 -
"122 The census of 1850 of Nelson County, Kentucky, gives age of Cornelius; names and ages of his son and grandchildren; but no mention is made of his wife Theresa, who it is presumed had died prior to that time.
"123 Nelson County, Kentucky, Marriage Records shows marriage to Susanna Shanks.
"124 Washington County, Kentucky, marriage records, Book 1, page 99.
"125 Edward Carrico married Matilda Dillehay, according to Washington County, Kentucky, marriage records, father John C. consenting.
"126 See footnote 122."
As for Homer's reliability, I have no idea. As a secondary source, I would only trust those data for which he cites a primary source (and of course, even so, I would get a copy of that source to confirm it).

Thank you for posting, John. I see my Catherine CARRICO and some of my WILLISes and TRIMBLEs.
I would be interested in anything furhter you have on WILLIS or TRIMBLE in Sullivan Co. I'm descended from Sarah TRIMBLE, daughter of Joseph TRIMBLE and Catharine CARRICO.

I have a good deal more on the descendants of Nina WILLIS because she is my maternal grandmother, but I have nothing else on Nina's or William Muphy's siblings.
It's easy to miss John R. WILLIS in the 1850 Census because he's indexed on the Broderbund CD -- and who knows where else -- as "John MILLER"!

Hello Roy and all!!
Just going to chime in here with my Malinda/Verlinda Carrico b. May 12,
1777 Md. (various counties have been mentioned). Judy Jennings did find
a death record at Richmond, Va. which stated Malinda's parents to be
Peter and Catherine Carrico. You, also, ref. it in your letter i.e.:
"Virlinda Wotring, white, female,---dgtr of Peter and Catherine
Carrico----" (some believe death records and some not---I am prone to
do so because, in 30-some years of searching, I have not come up with a
Francis <g> --ref. info in Morton book ) I think John Sissom (this list)
can also relate another "question" of Morton's book; same
family/generation. Carol Mitchell, I recall, had some information on
Monica several month's ago.(personal letter -not on this List). Hope
she will share it with us all.
Back to Peter Carrico b. 1722 Md.----there lies my problem. Your census
of 1810 has "P. Carrico with l male 16-26 and l female (assume you meant
female) 10-16 and 2 females under 10 ". If this is Peter b. 1722, it is
unlikely (not impossible) that this Peter would be about 78 years old
and fathering children-----this might mean that there was another Peter
between the Md. Peter and my Melinda. Does this make sense???
I have the book Aurora Documents by (he preferred "translated") Carl
Gower/Gauer? Ana Elisa Carrico's baptism is in the book. (Lutheran
Church Records of Aurora, Preston Co., WVa.)
I decend from Malinda/Virlinda Carrico and her husband Daniel Wotring
whose family came from Whitehall, Pa. to Hagerstown, Md., for a few
years, and finally settled in what is now Aurora, Preston Co., WVa.
abt. 1790. They were Reformed, then Lutheran's. Wotring's were
originally French in the 1500's-- then went to Switz. then to Germany
and finally to U.S. early 1700's
Have fun all!!!

I am new to the list in the last week or so and was pleased to find one with so much information... thanks to Carol I guess. But.... now I also see that she was flamed by another for doing so, not only directly but to the whole list, most of whom I am sure could care less. Now I guess I am guilty of the same although mine can only be called a warm spot.
If you want to flame someone please keep it one on one so others are not bothered. I will do the same.
Bye.

Subject: [CARRICO-L] Sorry to have posted so much
Due to the below being the opion of many of the Carrico E-Mail group
people, I wish to apoligize to the group for posting to much. Please
forgive me for taking up so much of the Lists time. Thank you.
I was just hopeing to get some corrections to errors in my family tree, if
anyone can give me correctins please do so, I would hope to have the
correct ancestors and not be chasing the wrong ones, but one never knows
until one finds the proof. Thank you for your time. I hope this will make
the list better.
About Carol, what do I say!!! .... she is so arrogant and full of herself
and critical of anyone who doesn't
march to her tune that she is not in the least open minded to be able to
even consider that something she pontificates may not be accurate or at
some point challenged. ........ You know some people becomes doctors
for respect and some people marry doctors for respect. ..Lots of others
don't agree with every word and all the silly reports with all her endnotes
does not make her data any more accurate that others in total.
We would all love to have more documentation and if our forefathers hadn't
taken such great pleasure in burning everything in sight, it might be an
easier task today.... . She has posted so much to the Carrico list, you
would think it was her own list. To think others might have a point of
view, how dare they!!!!!

Hi everyone,
I just joined the Carrico list and am enjoying the lively discussions. I

Peter, the immigrant. Carol Mitchell seems particularly KNOWLEDGEABLE of
the Carrico history.

That's what happens when I do an e-mail when I'm exhausted. Still am.
Hope that's the only error I made.

Hi everyone,
I just joined the Carrico list and am enjoying the lively discussions. I
hope someone will be able to help me establish my Carrico line back to
Peter, the immigrant. Carol Mitchell seems particularly knowledge of the
Carrico history.
My Carrico line is through Monica (sometimes spelled Monacah) Carrico
(died 1815), second wife of John Turton Goff (c1738-1803). The second
wife of James Goff (1735-1834), brother of John Turton Goff,, was
Catharine Carrico who may or may not have been a sister of Monica. John
Turton Goff and James Goff lived in Preston Co WV where they died.
The information I've been able to find is sketchy and may not be
completely accurate. This is as follows:
"History of Preston County West Virginia", Volume I, by Oren F Morton,
1914:
pages 331-332:
"Peter, Francis, and Catherine Carrico arrived in 1786 on the Pulliam
farm at the mouth of Wolf Creek. It is not known that their parents came
with them. Of four other brothers, one settled in Culpeper, one in
Charles county, Maryland, and one in Kentucky. The sons of Francis went
West. Peter had but one son, Joseph, whose six sons lived mainly in Reno
and Lyon [Districts]..."

Can anyone on the list tie the above information together? Does anyone
have any thoughts about this information? Any corrections? Can anyone
tell me how Monica (Carrico) Goff fits in the family? I once saw a paper
where a researcher listed her as born 1745, daughter of Bartholomew
Carrico, but this is incorrect. Monica and John T Goff were married
about 1780 (before Peter, Francis and Catharine Carrico arrived in
Preston Co WV). She was still of childbearing age as she had three
daughters by him. It is not known if she was previously married.
Catharine Carrico and James Goff were married around 1790. She was much
younger than her husband. Census records indicate she was born about
1765-75 while he was born in 1735. James Goff had 17 children by both
his wives. These children were born when he was 48-76 years old! And
without Viagra!
I apologize for the length of this post (also for my last remark).

Researchers,
Mary J. CARRICO, the dau of Alexander CARRICO, the grandaughter of John
Conley CARRICO, was born Abt. 1857 in Macoupin County, Illinois. I lost
track of her after 1870. Does anyone have her in their line?
Alternatively, does anyone have a marriage for Alexander CARRICO to
anyone in Illinois between 1845 and 1860? (Probably nearer to 1854.)
In 1864, the father of Mary J. CARRICO, Alexander CARRICO, married my
great grandmother, Cassandra Margaret SMITH and had Laura Ann CARRICO,
(1865 - 1948), who married George Leon DeBourney WHITE (1860 - 1917);
John Alexander CARRICO, (1868 - 1931), who married Clara M. DEGROFF (1867
- 1948); and Sarah Emma Elizabeth CARRICO, (1874 - 1952), who married
John C. BOTTIMER. Alexander CARRICO died 1874 and Cassandra Margaret
SMITH married Josiah Goodson HARLAN (1837 - 1880), April 10, 1877 and had
Cassandra Josephine HARLAN (1879 - 1880).
According to the Carlinville Democrat for Thursday, September 10, 1874,
"Mr. Alexander Carrico, who lived three miles east of town, after
returning home from town Friday evening in getting out of his buggy
stumbled over a can and fell to the ground striking on his head and
breaking his spinal column. He died in a few hours. He was born in 1816."
I would appreciate very much any additional knowledge of Mary J. CARRICO
or family.

To My Grandchildren, The Lisk and Sherman Kids,
Your Mother requests me to tell of my recollections of my grandparents.
First, I will tell of my Grandfather John Conley Carrico, who was born in
Virginia in 1778, and died in North Rock Woods, 7 miles N. W. of
Carrollton, Illinois, in 1862, aged 84 years.
He came to Greene County, Illinois, in 1827 and entered several thousand
acres of land, in the timber near a never failing spring of water which
was still flowing several years ago. He and Grandma lived in the house
adjoining the log cabin I was born in on the 17th day of November 1840.
My earliest recollection of them were his stories of his hunting
expeditions in the Blue Ridge Mountains, where he killed bears, turkeys,
panthers and smaller game. He had two bird dogs. One would take up
brother bear's trail, and the other one would nip after Bear until he
would take a tree, then Grandpa got in his work. As I was the only
grandson near, I was his chum from early childhood till I was in my 17th
year when I left home for school.
I was possibly six years of age when we took our last hunt together. He
failed to kill a squirrel after several shots and said to me, "I shall
never hunt again", and never did. I was taught to fish by him. He was the
most successful fisherman I ever saw for the big ones. I could beat him
for small ones. I soon grew up large enough to hunt and kept us all in
turkeys, ducks, pheasants and squirrels. There were hundreds of deer, but
I knew little about hunting them, never got none. He was a model, law
abiding man, and a religious one. No night passed he did not have family
prayer, just him, and Grandma. He, as far as I know, never took a drink
of whiskey, swore an oath, had trouble with his neighbors or strangers.
He never spoke a cross word to me, and he and grandma never quarreled. He
was a powerful man in his young days, a hard worker, an honest man, and
one of the most even tempered men I ever knew.
My Grandmother, Elizabeth Carrico, (maiden name Halbert) was born in
Maryland in 1776, two years older than Grandpa. She died in 1862 aged 86.
She was active up to her last sickness, her death occurred three months
prior to Grandpas. She was one of the model women of her age and when a
young woman must have been a beautiful one, even features, the finest
blue eyes I ever saw, and a temper as good as angels. She was my model
for a wife and her like is few and far between. Her squirrel pot pies and
hot biscuits are a pleasant memory as but yesterday. Your Mama inherits
some of her good traits. I trust all my grand children will so live that
their grandsons can say so much for them as I do for my grandparents who
died so many years ago.
Your Grandpa, Samuel T. Carrico, in his 84th year.
Carrico Researchers:
While searching for information, I found the following:
The Carrollton (IL) Patriot for June 8, 1900, datelined Kane, said: "an
interesting heirloom shown at the CARRICO reunion was the will of John
CARRICO which was made in 1812. A letter of almost equal antiquity was
read." This proves that a will existed, but the family connection is
somewhat cloudy. I don't believe that this was for my John Conley
CARRICO, although it is possible. I would certainly love to see it.
Are there any suggestions as to places to look for said will?

Patti,
Durn. No connection yet. It looks like we need to know your *great* grandparents' names. But then, I have a very small CARRICO/WILLIS database.
We should post all of our communications to CARRICO-L, as well as to each other, because there are many much more knowledgeable people on the list than I am (I've only been at this less than a year).
You don't know what you're saying when you offer to help Sullivan County researchers on these families. <heh, heh>
I would *love* to spend a week or two at the County Library and the County Records office there! I would say, gather all the primary data you can (marriages, deeds, wills, etc.) -- in addition to what you can find out from your mother -- and post it, both to CARRICO-L and WILLIS-L. The more you share, the more connections you'll make. "A rising tide lifts all boats," was never truer than in genealogy.
Fallon is in Churchill Co., NV, about 30 mi E of Reno. Fallon is the County Seat and they have a nice museum there, which has been tremendously helpful to me: They even had a photograph of William WILLIS's homestead and there were great obits in the local newspaper. However, I don't see any genealogical significance to my WILLISes having ended up there, except to William's descendants.
As soon as they fix the Churchill Co. GenConnect Obits page
http://cgi.rootsweb.com/~genbbs/genbbs.cgi/USA/Nv/ChurchillObits
I'll go ahead and post William WILLIS's obituary there (and his wife's). I have already posted them in the GenForum WILLIS forum:
http://genforum.familytreemaker.com/willis/
I'm sure we're not far from making a connection here. It's really exciting to have you join the list.

Pleased to meet you, Patti. Welcome to the delightfully obsessive world of genealogy!
I do not have a direct link for you, but we are certainly in the ballpark here.
My great-grandfather was William Murphy WILLIS, born 6 May 1853 in Carlisle, Sullivan Co., IN. William's parents were John R. WILLIS (b: 1824, IN; d: ?) and Sarah TRIMBLE (b: 23 Nov 1824, Haddon Twp., Sullivan Co., IN; d: ?). Sarah's parents were Joseph TRIMBLE (b. 3 Feb 1796, Lexington, Fayette Co., KY; d. 12 Jan 1873, Sullivan Co., IN) and Catherine CARRICO (b. 15 Jan 1801, IN; d. 3 Jan 1871, Haddon Twp., Sullivan Co., IN).
I'm having a great deal of difficulty with the WILLIS line, but once you have connected to Catherine CARRICO, your ancestry is known back to the Maryland immigrant, Peter CARRICO.
I suspect you are only one generation away from making a connection to these families. Who were your grandparents?
Diana
P.S. By the way, William Murphy WILLIS died 3 Feb 1912 in Fallon, Churchill Co., NV. He and his family immigrated there from Missouri in 1905. His wife, Ida BROWN (b: 30 Aug 1856, Lansing, Ingham Co., MI; m. 17 May 1877, Chillicothe, Livingston Co., MO) died in Fallon on 24 Nov 1943.

Carol,
Please do not stop posting. I may be disheartened that you suggest my
line is in error, but I would rather be correct than wrong. And, your
efforts push me to find more source documents to obtain the real descent
of my Martha Ann Carrico.
As has been said, should someone disagree or not want the information,
they can delete it. For me, I place it in my file in the hope that it
will either help support what is there or provide others with avenues of
research.
It seems the opinion of most on the list is positive - this is the one I
should think weighs most.
Be well,
Charles L. Mudd, Jr., Esq.
