I wanted to share something I think gives me hope of someday removing a few bricks from
the Carrico
Brick Wall.
A year ago my results were posted for the Family Finder test I took at FTDNA. For those
who are
unfamiliar, the Family Finder test is for both males and females and searches the data of
other
testers for matches to our DNA. We all have 22 pairs of chromosomes, one from each parent.
While
siblings will share a lot of DNA with each other, there will be some areas where they
don't match
each other as they rec'd different DNA from both parents as you will soon see :-)
Over the past year, I have also had both of my parents tested, 2 of my maternal
grandmother's
sisters tested (both Carrico's), and a 3rd cousin (Carrico) tested. I'm currently
waiting on results
for both of my mother's brothers and the daughter of another sister of my
grandmother.
In Feb 2013 I started a Carrico Family Project at FTDNA for others with Carrico ancestry.
We are now
up to 40 members.
A week ago, the results for our newest member came in. He is a descendant of Ann Carrico
who married
Benjamin Gibbons ca 1800 in PG or Charles Co., MD as his first wife. Benjamin moved his
family to AL
very early in the 1800's (sorry, don't know the exact timeing).
This desc. matched myself, mother, 1 great aunt & 3rd cousin as well as numerous
others in the
project and some Carrico descendants not yet in the project. He does not match the 2nd
great aunt.
After updating all of my databases (for the project and personal data) I noticed on 1
segment that
my aunt matched this newest member, was also in the same place which she matches another
member of
the project (a male Carrico desc. from James Carrico b 1783 d. LaRue Co., KY 1851 1st wife
Theresa
Hagan). Both great aunts match this male Carrico as does my 3rd cousin. My mother & I
do not.
Even though both my mother & I match the great aunt on this segment, we do not match
either of the
other 2 on this chromosome or segment.
Her sister doesn't match her (or mom & I) at all on this portion of the
chromosome, but she has 2
different matches, both with confirmed relatives. One who has a common ancester with her
fathers
mother and the other with her mothers mother.
Which means that the DNA the 1st great aunt has she rec'd from her father through his
father's side
or or mother through her fathers side. It's unlikely that it's through the
Thompson side of the
family and more likely the Carrico side since we are comparing 3 people with Carrico
ancestry but
totally different backgrounds. It's too soo to know if the DNA came from a male
Carrico or a male
Carrico's spouse. But surely it goes back into the 1700's in MD!
Now I need to watch for new matches to come through in common to all 3 individuals on this
segment
and maybe then we'll know more.
If you haven't thought about testing yourself for the Family Finder and/or upgrading
your Y-DNA test
to include Family Finder, the price has dropped considerably from the $289 I paid for my
test down
to the current price of $99.00
Please let me know if you have already tested and would like to become a member of the
Carrico
Family Project.
