In addition to the links Diana sent, here is the link to the FTDNA website:
http://www.familytreedna.com/
By clicking the various tests, you can see their explanation of what they are for etc.
The Y-DNA traces a males linage back through his male ancestors.
The mtDNA traces both male & female back through their female (maternal) ancestors. As
surnames
change with each generation, I'm finding this hard to follow at this time. (my
personal opinion)
The Family Finder traces both males & females via the DNA we inherited from both our
parents and
connects us to probable cousins on both sides of our family tree.

Is there a link to the carrico dna site? I've been mulling over having mine done or my
father's but
if the price is $99 usd, we may both be able to do it, although, my father is still
hesitant. In any
case, I would love to look at more information if you have a site I can look at.
Thank you!

I wanted to share something I think gives me hope of someday removing a few bricks from
the Carrico
Brick Wall.
A year ago my results were posted for the Family Finder test I took at FTDNA. For those
who are
unfamiliar, the Family Finder test is for both males and females and searches the data of
other
testers for matches to our DNA. We all have 22 pairs of chromosomes, one from each parent.
While
siblings will share a lot of DNA with each other, there will be some areas where they
don't match
each other as they rec'd different DNA from both parents as you will soon see :-)
Over the past year, I have also had both of my parents tested, 2 of my maternal
grandmother's
sisters tested (both Carrico's), and a 3rd cousin (Carrico) tested. I'm currently
waiting on results
for both of my mother's brothers and the daughter of another sister of my
grandmother.
In Feb 2013 I started a Carrico Family Project at FTDNA for others with Carrico ancestry.
We are now
up to 40 members.
A week ago, the results for our newest member came in. He is a descendant of Ann Carrico
who married
Benjamin Gibbons ca 1800 in PG or Charles Co., MD as his first wife. Benjamin moved his
family to AL
very early in the 1800's (sorry, don't know the exact timeing).
This desc. matched myself, mother, 1 great aunt & 3rd cousin as well as numerous
others in the
project and some Carrico descendants not yet in the project. He does not match the 2nd
great aunt.
After updating all of my databases (for the project and personal data) I noticed on 1
segment that
my aunt matched this newest member, was also in the same place which she matches another
member of
the project (a male Carrico desc. from James Carrico b 1783 d. LaRue Co., KY 1851 1st wife
Theresa
Hagan). Both great aunts match this male Carrico as does my 3rd cousin. My mother & I
do not.
Even though both my mother & I match the great aunt on this segment, we do not match
either of the
other 2 on this chromosome or segment.
Her sister doesn't match her (or mom & I) at all on this portion of the
chromosome, but she has 2
different matches, both with confirmed relatives. One who has a common ancester with her
fathers
mother and the other with her mothers mother.
Which means that the DNA the 1st great aunt has she rec'd from her father through his
father's side
or or mother through her fathers side. It's unlikely that it's through the
Thompson side of the
family and more likely the Carrico side since we are comparing 3 people with Carrico
ancestry but
totally different backgrounds. It's too soo to know if the DNA came from a male
Carrico or a male
Carrico's spouse. But surely it goes back into the 1700's in MD!
Now I need to watch for new matches to come through in common to all 3 individuals on this
segment
and maybe then we'll know more.
If you haven't thought about testing yourself for the Family Finder and/or upgrading
your Y-DNA test
to include Family Finder, the price has dropped considerably from the $289 I paid for my
test down
to the current price of $99.00
Please let me know if you have already tested and would like to become a member of the
Carrico
Family Project.

I will second Linda. Now that FF testing has dropped to $99 - not wanting to
think about how many tests I paid $289 for! - it's much more feasible to test
yourself and some near relatives.
FF is not like Y-DNA testing where one test of a distant cousins can answer your
primary question. With FF testing, the closer your relationship, the more the
testing will help, and the more near relations you test, the more it will help.
So, don't just test yourself and assume you can depend entirely on the testing
of distant CARRICO cousins to give you answers. Test everyone you can.

Diana,
I'd love to see more of our Y-DNA testers upgrade to Family Finder. I'm working in
my mind where to
put and post to my own Carrico page, would appreciate your help in promoting. My previous
posts to
the rootsweb/ancestry Carrico boards regarding FTDNA Family Finder have been deleteed
(guess I was
promoting something I shouldn't)
Have figured out how to "open" the contribution page in my GAP Carrico Family
Project page and still
working on where I need to go from here.

I'm afraid Ancestry does not allow commercial advertising or links, so I'm not
surprised your posts were deleted. And given that Ancestry is FTDNA's direct
competitor, I'm sure they're doubly diligent in scrubbing any posts about FTDNA.
But go to Google, do a search on
CARRICO DNA
and note what turns up. What doesn't show up is your Carrico Family site:
http://www.familytreedna.com/public/Carrico_Family/
For the sake of Google searches, you need to change the title (you can't change
the URL) to something with more keywords in it, for example
CARRICO Autosomal DNA (Family Finder) Project
or
CARRICO Family Finder (autosomal DNA) Project
and fill in the Background, Goals, News, Results, etc. pages with text, to give
Google some content to munch on.
One thing you can do, to give Google something to index, is add the CARRICO
lineages of members to your Results page, as I have done here with BIDDLE:
http://www.familytreedna.com/public/biddle/default.aspx?section=results
Obviously, I have stopped doing it that way in favor of having my own BiddleEtc
domain and TNG database:
http://biddleetc.org/
I would say this last is the best solution, that is, to create a site with TNG
(in addition to the FTDNA site):
http://lythgoes.net/genealogy/software.php
But the first thing to do is raise the rank of your FTDNA site at Google, and
that means increasing the volume of its content and giving Google the right key
words. Fortunately, FTDNA has a high ranking, itself, so you're several steps
up the ladder already. But without "DNA" in the title of your page, it's
not
going to get the kinds of hits you need.
And, yes, I need to give you some links on my pages. Will do as soon as I can.
