Hello List,
I just received a request to collaborate researching one of my
progenitors (in another surname, not CARRICO), along with a request to
donate to a fund to hire professional genealogists to aid in that
research. Of course, any request for money from a stranger sets off
all my alarm bells, as I'm sure it does you.
I contacted other researchers on the same progenitor, and they have
received the same message. All of us have web sites or engage in
other activities that would have allowed anyone with an internet
connection to know we are researching in this area.
This person spent some time gathering information about this
progenitor, at least enough to make it sound like he might be a
legitimate researcher - though a novice - but the request for funds
was the red flag.
With a little effort, he could alter his message to do the same with
any other progenitor who's been discussed online, so I'm just alerting
you in case you get something similar.
