Diana,
I thought I should comment on this more clearly. Maybe it will help
some of the others who I know are asking the same question.
The most notable characteristic of Jewish haplotypes, in general, in
haplogroup J (I imagine this can be seen in other haplogroups
as well), is that they have *a lot* of _*very*_ close matches with other
Jewish families, that is, families who have different surnames. Thus,
they form very strong clusters.
Non-Jewish families, on the other hand, are much more diverse, that is,
they have much greater variance in their haplotypes.
Since your Carricos are extreme outliers in J2a1b, they are, by that
very fact, most unlikely to be Jewish in origin, at least until we
suddenly find a whole group of Jewish families with a very similar
haplotype.
I hope some other J2a1b haplotypes will appear in the next year or two
that share some common elements with that haplotype, so that
we can get some clues about their background.
This is one of the cases in which I would strongly suggest looking
toward anywhere but Jewish ancestry as a likely origin of that
particular line of Carricos.
