Hello List,
We now have all the "advanced" STR test results from FTDNA returned for #86809,
the descendant of Peter CARRICO through his son, Abel CARRICO:
http://dgmweb.net/genealogy/DNA/Carrico/CarricoDNA-results.shtml#J2a1b-Ad...
These are the STR markers that FamilyTreeDNA (FTDNA) added to their offerings
when they purchased the German company, DNA-FingerPrint (DNA-FP). At present,
only some of these markers can be uploaded to Ysearch, but FTDNA will likely
make all of these markers uploadable eventually (their programmers could never
be accused of being speedy). However, in the interim, all of the markers are
available on the above linked page at my web site, and I've announced on the
GENEALOGY-DNA mailing list (and now here) that they are available.
The DNA-FP web site still exists under its own name:
http://www.dna-fingerprint.com/
as does the DNA-FP database, Ymatch:
http://www.dna-fingerprint.com/modules.php?op=modload&name=ymatch
The DNA-FP Ymatch database is rather like Ysearch, the public database sponsored
by FTDNA, in that it's publicly searchable and anyone can add their results, not
just customers of DNA-FP. The major difference is that Ymatch contains all the
customers of DNA-FP, while FTDNA keeps its customer database completely separate
from the Ysearch database. (The FTDNA customer database is not searchable by
the public, its own customers, or even project administrators; hence the need
for FTDNA to sponsor the public Ysearch database giving its customers the option
to upload to it.) The fact that Ymatch is DNA-FP's combined customer and public
database is why you will find that a search on Ymatch returns only about a third
of the records in the database on any given search (i.e., because 2/3 of
DNA-FP's clients have chosen not to make their results public).
I would recommend that our member register at DNA-FP and enter his test results
to the Ymatch database. You can remain anonymous by using an unidentifiable
UserName and leaving the Name field blank (or give me leave to do it for you,
then I will be the contact person). At some point, DNA-FP clients will be given
the option of being added to the FTDNA database (and hence, if they choose, to
do an easy upload to Ysearch), but that means first adapting Ysearch to handle
all the additional markers, so I don't expect the databases to be merged any
time soon. In the interim, being in the Ymatch database at least puts the
markers into a publicly searchable database where they are likely to be found by
researchers. You can see what an entry looks like by going to the Members List:
http://www.dna-fingerprint.com/modules.php?op=modload&name=Members_Li...
ex
and entering Matthiesen in the Search box, then choose the "Real Name"
radiobutton and click the Submit button. As you will see, I have not made my
entry anonymous, although the results are of a male cousin whose identity is not
revealed. You can also browse the member list and get an idea how many people
show their identity and test results and how many do not.
Thus far, very few Haplogroup J's have had these advanced markers tested, and a
search at Ymatch shows only one J2f (=J2a1b) has had even some of them tested.
As I show in the Advanced results (first link given above), our FTDNA #86809
matches DNA-FP #6122.70 on quite a few markers, and #6122.70 is by far the
closest match of anyone in the Ymatch database. Interestingly, #6122.70 has the
standard value of 12t at the second DYF371 marker (=DYS425), while both of our
CARRICOs have the unique value of 10t (green table cells). So the 10t value
does not appear to have been a "fluke" peculiar to one individual, but a
characteristic of Peter CARRICO's descendants.
So, what is the value of testing all these markers? Until more people have them
tested, I must admit not much. We simply have to be grateful to our member for
"breaking the ice" on getting these markers tested. With the exception of the
10t result, I don't know yet if any of these advanced results are remarkable in
and of themselves, but I do know what I hope we can use them for, eventually.
But I think I'll discuss this in another message.
As always, if anyone has any questions or comments, please don't hesitate to
post.
Diana
