Diana,
Given that some of what has been published on the Carrico's has had it's faults
with reliability, have you set up guidelines for proving back to the earliest
known ancestor to make whatever information comes of the DNA testing reliable?
Just curious,
Linda

Subject: [CARRICO-DNA] what will DNA testing tell us
Hello Linda,
Considering the expense of DNA testing, it's well to ask what it can do for
our
genealogy. In a nutshell, the results of this kind of testing of the
male
Y-chromosome can give you a probability as to whether two people share a near
common ancestor. The nearer the common ancester, the closer two people should
match. This is a very powerful test from the standpoint of validity, and that
makes it the best thing that's happened to genealogy, ever.
Two of the most basic questions we can answer in the CARRICO project are:
1) Are all CARRICOs in the U.S. related? (Do they all descend from Peter
CARRICOE, the 1674 immigrant to Maryland?)
2) Where are the European ancestors of American CARRICOs? Are we French?
Portuguese? Italian? Or does CARRICO have multiple origins?
I realize I'm being very Americo-centric here because I'm sure there are
European CARRICOs who are equally interested in solving their genealogical
problems.
I try to answer the basic and common questions about this kind of DNA testing
on
the project web pages:
http://dgmweb.net/genealogy/DNA/Carrico/CarricoDNA.shtml
Especially the links labeled "Introduction to Genealogy and Genetics" and
"FAQs," but I'll be happy to answer any specific questions you might have.
As for pin-pointing a specific ancestor (an individual person), DNA testing
cannot do this. It can only tell you how probable a paper connection is. In
that regard, the tests are most powerful when there is a mis-match because
that
falsifies the pedigree. When the tests are positive with regard to
matching,
what they are saying to you is: these results are consistent with your
"paper"
genealogy -- and that is a good thing to know!
