Hello List,
I've been asked to compile a list of available tests, beyond the 67-marker
package offered by FamilyTreeDNA. It will take several messages to reply
fully...
With their purchase of DNA-Fingerprint, FTDNA acquired their test panels, which
they offer as "Advanced" tests. These can be identified by the
"DNA-FP" in the
name of the panel on their price list at your member page (under "Order Tests"
-- "Advanced"). Many of the DNA-FP panels contain markers duplicating tests in
the FTDNA 67-marker set, so it would be a waste of money to simply purchase the
five DNA-FP panels in their entirety. Thankfully, the DNA-FP tests are offered
"a la carte," so I'm listing below just the DNA-FP tests that are *not*
duplications:
DNA-FP Panel 2
DYS 463 $6.20 - SMGF
DYS 643 $6.20
SubTotal $12.40
DNA-FP Panel 3
DYS 461 $6.20 - SMGF
DYS 462 $6.20 - SMGF
DYS 635 $6.20 - SMGF
DYS 726 $6.20
SubTotal $24.80
DNA-FP Panel 4
DXYS 156 $8.68
DYS 435 $6.20
DYS 452 $6.20 - SMGF
DYS 485 $6.20
DYS 716 $6.20
YGGAAT-1B07 $6.20 - SMGF
DYS 445 $6.20 - SMGF
DYS 495 $6.20
DYS 717 $6.20
DYS 434 $6.20
DYS 441 $6.20 - SMGF
DYS 714 $6.20
YGATA-A10 $6.20 - SMGF
SubTotal $83.08
DNA-FP Panel 5 Palindromic Pack - $102.00
DYF 371X $19.88
DYF 399X $14.88
DYF 411 $8.68
DYS 724 $8.68
DYF 385 $8.68
DYF 401 $8.68
DYS 725 $11.16
DYF 397 $11.16
DYF 408 $11.16
SubTotal $102.96
Total (for all 28 markers): $222.28
There are two tests in the Panel 5 Palindromic Pack that are duplicates (DYS413
and DYS724=CDYab) and one test that is really only useful for Haplogroup R1b
(DYS464X), but the bundled price of $102 for the entire pack makes it actually a
few cents cheaper just to purchase the entire pack.
The "SMGF" notation indicates tests made by the Sorensen Molecular Genealogy
Foundation that are not taken in the FTNDA 67-marker set. SMGF is the biggest
"bargain" in DNA testing in that they will test you for free:

Of course, you get what you pay for because... you will wait a year or more for
your results to return, and they do not notify you that they have returned. You
have to keep going back to their database to search for yourself and hope you
can identify yourself by your surname and the four-generation ancestry you are
required to submit with your sample. One reason they cannot notify you is that,
to insure your privacy, your identifying information is discarded, which also
means you lose ownership and control of your sample. Still, I can see no harm
in donating a sample, and it is a way to pick up nine markers and to be in the
SMGF database (though no one can identify or contact you through the database,
even if their results match yours). Personally, I'd just as soon pay for the
nine markers and have it done at FTDNA ($55.80).
I'll post additional lists separately...
