Hello List,
We have a new member (#164134), and his 37 markers have returned. He is a
descendant of Jacque / Jack CARASSO of Salonica, Greece, and New York, NY. His
ancestors had fled to Greece from Spain, probably in the late 1490s, during the
Spanish Inquisition.
He is not a match to anyone in the project, but he is a match to another
CARASSO, also from Salonica, and also tested at FTDNA, who was tested outside
the project. Unfortunately, the other CARASSO has not responded to my
invitation to join.
Our subject is a near match to several other families of surnames ALALOF,
ALVAREZ (MENDEZ), ARELLANO, GARZA, HAMLIN, and LEVI. Of the ones with a known
origin, these families also originated in Spain:

Our subject has not been deep SNP tested, but several others in the table have
been, and they turn out to be root/ancestral R1b1*, which is quite rare. I
would encourage our CARASSO to also be deep SNP tested, to be absolutely certain
this haplotype match in not a coincidence. I would also encourage everyone in
the table to upgrade to 67 markers. The ALVAREZ has updated, and most of his
markers have returned.
If you scroll to the right, there is a cladogram of their relationships below
the test data. As it stands, it only takes a few mutations to derive all of
them from a common ancestor, but that may be an artifact of testing so few
markers. If everyone would test 67 markers, we would probably pick up more
mutations, so we'd have a more precise assessment of their relationships.
Now I'm off to watch, "Faces of America," on PBS. It starts in one minute!
