JAMES CARRICK DIES SUDDENLY
The Grim Reaper, with very little announcement, called at the Carrick home
last Friday night and called home the father, James Carrick.
The subject of our sketch was born June 11, 1856, at Nashville, Kentucky, and
passed away at 10:15 Friday evening, March 3rd. (1916)
He was married on October 20, 1880 to Alice Orline Lamb. To this union, five
children, two girls and three boys were born. They are: Tom and Hillary, of
Clyde, Gene of Fairbury, Neb., Hazel, at home, and Mrs. Stella Laughlin,
of Concordia. Besides the wife and children, three brothers and one sister
survive.
We reproduce an article below written by J. P. Randolph, who has probably
known James Carrick longer than any other man in Clyde:
"When about fifteen years old he engaged with Majors Waddell and Russell to
drive an Ox Train across the plains from Leavenworth to Santa Fe, Mexico, and
although very small and could scarcely manage to carry the yoke for his oxen,
he succeeded admir'ably and so pleased his employers that they continued him
several years in their employment. He encountered many thrilling adventures
while on these trips and while he seldom spoke of them, yet there are those
who enjoyed his confidence to whom he had related these experiences and with
whom he enjoyed talking of the early days on the plains.
"He came to Clyde in 1875 or 1876, was selected by the firm of Upton, Barons
&
Co. to take charge of and superintend the management of their large Cattle
Feeding Business at that time, remaining with them some three years. In the
spring of 1879 he, together with J. F. Randolph, drove four mule outfits
from Clyde to Leadville, Colo. While returning, he engaged as manager of a
large Hay Ranch, owned by a Mr. Henry, of Denver, Colo., and remained in
charge of same, some two years, returning then to Clyde where he has lived
since that time.
"About 25 years ago he accepted the appointment of City Marshall for the city
of Clyde. It has ever been conceded that Mr. Carrick was as efficient a
Marshal as Clyde ever had:. He held this position for some 12 years. He was
again appointed to this position on March 1st, 1916, and had only filled the
place two days when he was stricken with apoplexy. Mr. Carrick was for many
years Duty Sheriff, of Cloud County, and Constable of Elk Twp., all of which
positions he filled with honor and credit, and was at all times recognized as
an able and efficient Officer.
"In the performance of duty he was honest and fearless. His enemies will long
remember him as one whom they were compelled to respect. His friends will
ever
respect him as one on whom they could rely for protection against
lawbreakers.
Perfection on earth has never yet been attained. Suffer then the apologies of
human nature to plead for him who can no longer plead for himself.
"Mr. Carrick was a faithful member of the I.O.O.F. Lodge, holding an honorary
membership badge. He was also a member of the Sons & Daughters of Justice and
carried $1,000.00 Insurance in that Order. The Elk Hose Co., and I.O.O.F.
were
represented as orders at the funeral services.
"The funeral services were held from the Presbyterian Church Monday afternoon
at 3 O'Clock. Rev. Bolton in charge, and the I.O.O.F. were present in a body
to show their last respect to the departed xnember.
"Interrment was made in Mt. Hope Cemetery.
