I'm not sure why you figure there could not have been two different ladies
named " Susan Dawson/Lawson", especially since they were two generations
apart. I find that names are often reused. There are at least 20 John
Carricks in my database. It seems likely to me that one of these ladies
might have been Dawson and the other Lawson and the names were mixed up by
later generations.

Subject: [CARRICK] Rebeckah Carrick, m. Bath Co., VA, 1799, John Smith;
Moses Carrick (PA, VA, KY, TN, etc.)
Bath County, Virginia marriage bonds show a bond dated 15 October 1799
for a marriage between John Smith and Rebeckah Carrick. They moved
from Bath County, Virginia to Champaign (now Logan) County, Ohio in
1811, and Rebeckah/Rebecca (Carrick) Smith was still alive in 1817.
John Smith was married again in Logan County in 1838 to Harriet Camper
and died in 1840 or 1841. He may have also had another wife named
Sarah in between Rebecca and Harriet. John Smith had nine known
children, of whom at least the first seven (and probably all nine) were
by Rebecca Carrick, and there are many descendants (including myself).
I have been trying to find proof of the parentage of Rebecca Carrick.
Both chronology and geography suggest that she was likely to have been
a granddaughter of John Carrick of Adams County, Pennsylvania, who died
in 1812 at the age of nearly 100. Three of the four sons of this John
Carrick, John Carrick Jr., Moses Carrick, and Rev. Samuel Carrick, are
found on the tax lists of Rockbridge County, Virginia (adjacent to Bath
County).
Rev. Samuel Carrick can be ruled out as Rebecca's father, and Rebecca
is not named in John Jr.'s will, which does not prove that he was not
her father, but still leaves Moses Carrick as the most likely candidate
for Rebecca's father. His family seems to be obscure. The only child
of Moses Carrick for whom I have seen clear proof is John Montgomery
Carrick (mentioned in his grandfather's will). Is there any reliable
information about other children of Moses Carrick? Is the name of
Moses Carrick's wife known? This Moses Carrick's wife was clearly not
the Susan Dawson/Lawson claimed by many, as the latter was the wife of
a Moses Carrick from a later generation.
