As a German "Carrick" I can accurately explain why the confusion has taken
place. There are two branches that share a common spelling due almost exclusively to the
influence of the USA.
Scottish Carricks descend from a line whose name was Carraig (pronounced /'hkæ.rIk/)
German Carricks are actually from Saarland or another Franconian (not to be confused with
french)speaking region. Their name descends from the Kerch / Kirch spellings, the Kerch
being the correct one. (pronounced /'kE.rIX/)
If an American listens to native speakers saying these respective names the result will be
Carrick / Karrick / Kerrick, depending upon the individual's prejudices.
If anyone has read Betty Mann's book about the Carrick line, you will see that her
research proves that the line of "Carrick" I am descended from settled in German
areas and attended German churches in the USA
Hope this clears up some confusion
