In the movie National Treasure, shortly before the end of the movie the hero
mentions Charles Carroll. Among other things he was one of the signers of
the Declaration of Independence. His family was very prominent in the area
of Maryland and Southern Pennsylvania. He also received land grants from the
King, including one that he called Carroll's Folly, after the style of the
time. This land is just north of Emmitsburg, MD and includes the area where
Ortana, PA is. He divided it up into parcels and sold it. One of the buyers
was John Carrick, the oldest Carrick ancestor that we have been able to
trace.
So, if you watch the movie, be sure to listen carefully just before the end
for the mention of Charles Carroll and reflect on how things were for
my(your?) ancestors when they came here.
It's been a quiet year on the list. Why don't you take a few minutes and
tell us about your oldest known ancestor?
