I may have some information regarding your Gailen Carrick. I have gathered a great deal
of information on the Carrick line that descends from John Carrick of Prince George's
County Maryland. I am very interested in exchanging information and getting information
on all descendants, right up to the current day.

John Francis Carrick Sr., is the first Carrick known to settle in Prince George's
County, Maryland. Church records show that he married Ann Duvall, daughter of Mareen -the
younger of Anne Arundel County of Maryland and Elizabeth (Jacob) Duvall, about 1729.5 The
Duvall plantation adjoined that of John Carrick. Ann was born 8 May 1709, in Queen
Anne's Parish.5 Ann probably died before 1768. He died in 1791, while in his
eighties.
On 25 August 1742, John Carrick, wheelright, purchased of Thomas Lancaster, Gent., for
3000 pounds of tobacco, "Moore's Industry" lying at the head of the droughts
which led to the Patuxent River.6 "Moore's Industry" was granted to a
George Moore on 21 October 1718. The original land grant for "Moore's
Industry" was written on sheep skin, and resides at the Maryland Hall of Records in
Annapolis --donated by children of James Madison Carrick.
On 28 August 1856, John Carrick, planter of Prince George's county, sold five Negroes
to John Brice, City of Annapolis, for 35 pounds, 18 shillings, and 10 pence sterling and
24 pounds, 4 shillings, and 10 pence currency.10
He and John Maigill bought one small mare and one brown heifer from John Bullman for 427
pounds of tobacco and 2 shilling, 6 pence on 27 October 1756. It was recorded on 15
November 1756.11
The record shows that John Carrick was granted a petition he made regarding his receiving
'vacant' land adjoining "Moore's Industry", which he owned. He paid
and satisfied Edward Boyd, Esq., the present agent and receiver general for the Lord
Proprietor, to the amount of 28 pounds, 16 shillings, and 12 pence sterling. On 29
September 1762, it granted and confirmed John Carrick the land to be known as
"Carrick's Industry," lying in Prince George's County, on the West side
of the Patuxent River and on the North side of a branch called Horsepen. The petition
amounted to John Carrick acquiring 600 acres of land.8
On 26 July 1768, for love and natural affections he deeded 50 acres of
"Carrick's Industry" to his son, John Carrick Jr. The tract lay on the West
side of the Patuxent River on a branch called Horsepen Branch. No wife waiver dower; the
witnesses were Thomas Williams and Richard Duckett Jr.2
Richard Peach requested, on 11 May 1773, that the record show that he purchased 200 acres
of land from John Carrick for 110 pounds sterling. Formerly part of "Carrick's
Industry," the land was to be called "Peaches Purchase."9
On 9 May 1776, John Carrick Sr., of Prince George's County, conveyed to William
Waters, wheelright, for 57 pounds, a portion of "Carrick's Industry,"
adjoining "Moore's Industry." No wife waiver dower.3
His will1 was written 14 December, 1791 and probated on 15 December 1792. It included
the following:
- to granddaughter Elizabeth Boyd, a Negro girl
- to granddaughter Elizabeth Kehely (Kayhawley), 30 acres of land where she now lives
during her natural life, after her decease to be Francis Carrick's, son of Mareen and
his heirs
- to grandson William, 50 acres of land at the South side of tract of land called
"Moore's Industry" and 40 acres of "Carrick's Industry"
- to John Francis (no stated relation), part of 50 acres of "Carrick's
Industry"
- to granddaughter Mary Carrick, 2 cows
- freedom to certain slaves
- willed remainder of cows, horses, plantation utensils, and household furniture of
every kind be exposed to sale to pay debts
- that William Carrick, John Carrick and my executor (Mareen Carrick) proportionally pay
remainder of debts
- to my beloved son Mareen, the remainder of ''Moore's Industry" during
natural life, then
to revert to Francis to be enjoyed by him and his heirs forever

2 Mareen Carrick, son of John and Anne (Duvall) Carrick, was born about 1735, in Queen
Anne's Parish, Prince George's County, Maryland.10 He was married twice and died
1793. His first wife has not been proven, but is believed to have been Sarah Clark,
daughter of Henry Clark. Because Maryland did not have a law regulating marriage license
until 1776, assume the marriage was before that and why there is no record. He secured a
license to marry Mary Elizabeth Jones on 1 October 1782, in Prince George's County,
Maryland, and was married by the Rev. Edward Gantt. 5
On 10 December 1762, Mareen Carrick bought 100 acres of land from Mordicai, Thomas, and
Phillip Moore for 36 pounds current money. The parcel of land was formally part of
"Moore's Industry."9
On 27 November 1776, Mareen bought 13 acres of land from Edward Waters for 24 pounds.
The land was known as "Cherry Walk."6
During March 1778, he subscribed to the Oath of Fidelity in Upper Marlboro, Prince
George's County, Maryland, before Magistrate Benjamin Hall.1
His will was dated 22 October 1793, and probated 3 November 1793.2 It included.
-to son Henry, all "Moore's Industry" adjoining Henry Clarke's lying on
the west side of a branch
-to daughter Susanna, one feather bed & furniture
-will all other property both real and personal to be enjoyed mutually by my son Francis
and all my children by my last wife Elizabeth, until they become of age, then
-my real property to be divided among my sons Francis, Obed, and Daniel and personal
property to be sold and divided among all children
-my crop of tobacco to be sold to pay my debts
-I appoint my son Henry, my executor
Mareen Carrick's property was inventoried and appraised on 8 February, 1794, and
registered with Prince George's County authorities on 11 February 1794.3 It was
approved and signed by Henry and Francis Carrick and Thomas Duvall, Mareen Carrick's
administrator. The appraised value totaled 99 pounds, 8 shillings, and 2 pence. The sale
took place on 13 February 1794.4 Purchaser's included: his wife Elizabeth; sons
Francis and Henry; daughters Susannah and Rachel; daughter-in-law Mary, wife of Francis; a
William Carrick (relationship unknown); and many others. Among the items sold were; four
Negro's, household items, horses, 300 pounds of tobacco, a small house of tobacco, and
farming equipment. Sales total; 142 Pounds, 19 shillings, 11 pence.
On 12 August 1796, Elizabeth was appointed guardian of "Rachel Carrick aged 13
years, Cassandra Carrick aged 10 years next July and Obed Carrick aged 7 years next
April..." "...orphans of Mareen Carrick deceased...."7 On 30 August 1797,
Josiah Jones and Richard Walker who were summoned to appraise the real property of the
late Mareen Carrick came forth with the following; "...appraised and valued the said
property to be in our opinion and ______ of the value of one pound fifteen shillings
current money per acre..." and "...estimated to contain one hundred and thirty
