The will of John Carrick has been posted on my website for several years now.
You will also find there links to many things Carrick/Kerrick. Follow the
links to Genealogy. The link is in my "signature" near the end of this
message. I have a fairly good database of the descendants of these folks. I
will be happy to forward it to any to ask (since we can't send it to the list
as it is.) Please specify whether you want it in book form or as a GEDCOM
file.
I can also send you the complete will as an image file along with a text file
that is a transcription.
Samuel ended up founding Blount College in Knoxville. It became the U. of TN.
Moses and John Montgomery and others ended up in and around Sparta, White Co.,
TN. After the Late Unpleasantness many of them migrated to Harmon Co., OK
where my father grew up.
You may also be interested to know that the farm and the house that John built
is now run as a Bed & Breakfast. It is called Hickory Bridge Farm. They know
of the history of the place and will be happy to arrange for you to stay in
part of the house if you will let them know you are a Carrick. Unfortunately,
they are not descended from John, so there is no freebie. ;) They are on the
web but if you can't find them let me know. Most of the town of Ortanna, PA is
on the property once owned by John Carrick.
I have not been able to get to get to Emmitsburgh, the nearby town in
Frederick Co. myself to check, but the checking done by the folks there in the
Historical Society for me did not find anything on John, but did turn up two
other Carricks, Samuel and James. Given the way family names were reused in
their large families, there is no way to tell if these were the sons of John
or were brothers, etc. I am personally inclined to the latter interpretation
because of their probable ages. I think that for a small research fee they
could do some more extensive research but I am not actively researching right
now.
John's name turns up a few times in the MD state historical record. Once or
twice it is on a petition to the legislature with one or both of these other
Carricks. So they certainly knew each other and were likely related.
The other references I have seen to Carroll's Delight indicate that this
property was mostly sold to Scots-Irish folk. Thet's the only clue we have
about where they came from. I have found no ship's records with any of these
names to tell us more. There were also many German imigrants in the area as
well, and I think that most of the Scots-Irish folk later left because they
didn't get along too well with the Germans who came to dominate the local
culture.
Needless to say, if you have any further info. on any of the other lines I
would be happy to hear about it.
Regards,
Cousin Gil

I recently went to the Adams Co.,PA, Historical Society, and made a copy of the Will of
John Carrick.
The Will was written, May 10,1808, it was probated March 3,1812, and John Carrick,
according to the Historical Societies paperwork, at the time of his death, was almost 100
years old. That would place his birth circa 1712.
